Chandigarh, Sept.13, 2026:-The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Chandigarh has launched a strong attack on the BJP-ruled Municipal Corporation and the Chandigarh Administration over alleged corruption and the use of substandard construction material in the reconstruction of the Community Centre in Sector 29-C.
AAP leaders alleged that despite a fresh tender worth approximately ₹7.85 crore, the contractor is allegedly using old, deteriorated, weak and moss-covered bricks recovered from the demolished structure to construct walls of the new building. They further alleged that the construction work being carried out at the site raises serious questions about quality standards and the proper utilisation of public money.
After conducting a surprise inspection of the construction site along with AAP Chandigarh Observer Vineet Verma, AAP Trade Wing State Vice President and Ward No. 10 leader Tarsem Mittal strongly criticised the Municipal Corporation and the local BJP councillor.
Mittal said that the project had been inaugurated by UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria and Mayor Saurabh Joshi with tall claims, but the ground reality, according to him, presents a completely different picture. He alleged that despite a project budget of nearly ₹8 crore, construction is being carried out using old bricks and inadequate construction material.
He said that community Centre is meant for the public, where hundreds of residents will gather for social and family functions. If the use of allegedly weak or substandard material compromises the safety of the structure and any unfortunate incident occurs in the future, the Municipal Corporation and the ruling BJP will have to be held accountable.
He questioned why old, discarded bricks were allegedly being used when the tender was meant for the reconstruction of the entire structure. He demanded that the authorities clarify who approved the material and whether proper quality checks are being conducted at the site.
During the inspection, AAP Observer Vineet Verma said that the alleged irregularities raise serious questions about transparency and accountability in the execution of civic projects.
Verma said that while the city has witnessed instances of public infrastructure being repeatedly replaced despite being in usable condition, a project involving public safety cannot be allowed to compromise on construction quality.
Verma said that public money belongs to the people. Every rupee spent on a civic project must be accounted for, and construction quality cannot be compromised under any circumstances.
Tarsem Mittal and Vineet Verma demanded that the Chandigarh Administrator and Municipal Corporation Commissioner immediately order a comprehensive inspection of the Sector 29 Community Centre project, stop any construction found to be in violation of approved specifications, and order an independent Vigilance/technical inquiry into the material being used at the site.
They further demanded that, if violations are established, responsibility should be fixed on the contractor as well as the officials responsible for supervision and quality control, with appropriate action taken as per law.
The AAP leaders warned that if the authorities fail to initiate a transparent inquiry and ensure that the project complies with prescribed quality standards, the party will mobilise local residents and launch a public agitation against the Municipal Corporation.
