PGI Celebrates International Left Handers Day

Chandigarh 13th August:- International left hander's day was celebrated the Social Pediatrics division of Advanced Pediatrics centre, PGI, Chandigarh at Govt Primary School Sector 23, Chandigarh. 

Dr Bhavneet Bharti, Additional Professor, at PGI elaborated upon various difficulties faced by left hand school children. She also provided hands on training to nursery teachers regarding positioning of hand and notebook during writing, cursive writing by left handers and sitting arrangement for them. Dr Bhavneet Bharti interacted with group of left handed children of the school and enquired about their difficulties in school as well as household chores. Left handed children felt very special when they were told about this unique day celebrating the Left handedness. She said that in one of the surveys conducted by us in public schools of Chandigarh the prevalence of left handedness is approximately 10%. The Principal of the Govt Primary School Sector 23 said that she herself was surprised and did not anticipate that so many children in her school were left handed. Dr Bhavneet explained to students and their teachers about online availability of various tools like scissors, knives, musical instruments and cursive writing books, for the left handed children. She demystified various myths related to use of left hand prevalent in society.

Dr Sahul Bharti of Build Healthy India Movement conducted an educational quiz highlighting various left hand dominant celebrities in the field of education; sports, politics and religion were also conducted.

Many children voiced their difficulties in using scissors, cutting with knife or playing some musical instruments. Some of the children did say that they had been stopped by their parents or grandparents to write with left hand citing various reasons such as being evil or anticipated difficulty in future living in right handed world.
