Chandigarh, May 1, 2026:- The Chandigarh Punjab Union of Journalists (CPUJ) organized a rally today on the occasion of International Labour Day by forming a human chain at City Centre, Sector 17, Chandigarh. The members of the union representing different newspapers and media houses participated in the event.
The rally aimed to highlight the concerns of working journalists and reaffirm their commitment to press freedom and labour rights.
President CPUJ and secretary general of Indian Journalists Union (IJU) Vinod Kohli addressed the gathering. He emphasized the need for safeguarding the rights of journalists, ensuring fair wages, job security, and a safe working environment. He also underlined the crucial role of media in a democratic society and called for unity among journalists to tackle emerging challenges.
As part of the programme, participants formed a human chain by holding their hands in solidarity, symbolizing unity and collective strength of the media fraternity.
May Day serves as a reminder of the struggles and achievements of workers across sectors. They reiterated their commitment to continue in advocating for the welfare and dignity of journalists.
Vinod Kohli demanded inclusion of electronic media in the preview of the press council by re naming it's as media council. This he said, would help in addressing issues related to electronic media also.
He also stressed the immediate need of reconstitution of Media Accreditation Committee in Chandigarh and Punjab as per guidelines of press council of India.
Earlier he demanded from Chandigarh administration the introduction of pension scheme for journalists including working on the desk.
The rally concluded peacefully with a strong message of solidarity and unity.
