Congress Challenges BJP Councillors to Resign Over Unjustified Property Tax Levy in Chandigarh

By 121 News
Chandigarh, April 18, 2025:-Chandigarh Pradesh Congress Committee President, H.S. Lucky, today issued a strong statement challenging the sincerity of BJP councillors in opposing the arbitrary imposition of Property Tax on Chandigarh residents. If the BJP councillors are truly against the tax, he said, they should immediately resign from their positions in protest.

Harmohinder Lucky dared the BJP councillors to publicly announce the time, location, and the name of the official to whom their resignations would be submitted. He assured that the Congress Party's Senior Deputy Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and all Congress councillors would reach the designated spot before the BJP councillors to demonstrate their genuine commitment to the cause and solidarity with the people of Chandigarh.

Condemning the Chandigarh Administration's decision to impose yet another financial burden, Lucky accused the BJP of working in collusion with the administration to exploit the citizens. He said that at a time when people are already struggling with inflation and unemployment, this new and arbitrary property tax is a direct assault on the common man.

Harmohinder Lucky reminded the public of the BJP's earlier promises, particularly their claim that once a BJP Mayor was installed, the Municipal Corporation would receive ample funds.  He added that it has been nearly three months since their Mayor assumed office, but there has been no improvement. Instead of bringing in funds from the Centre or securing resources from the Administration, the BJP is now dipping into the pockets of ordinary citizens.

Highlighting the enormity of the issue, he pointed out that the new tax burden amounts to a staggering Rs 50 crore, a sum that will be forcibly extracted from already strained households.

HS Lucky said that the BJP boasts about its 'double engine' government – with power at the Centre, a BJP Prime Minister, Home Minister, and even the city's administration functioning under the Home Ministry. Despite this, they have completely failed to safeguard the interests of the people of Chandigarh.

He also criticized the BJP for staging a protest outside the Congress Bhawan on the issue of the National Herald. He said that instead of wasting their energy on political theatrics, they should have demonstrated against the Chandigarh Administration on matters that truly affect the lives of residents.

Meanwhile, the Chandigarh Congress has announced a massive protest against the imposition of Property Tax, to be held in Manimajra on Sunday. The party has urged all citizens to join and raise their voice against the unjust taxation.
