PGI Doctors Sensitize School Students About Disability & Rehabilitation

Chandigarh 03rd December:- A health talk was given to the students of Government Model High School, sector 25 Chandigarh on the occasion of International day for persons with disability. It was delivered by Dr Kirtan Rana and Dr Urvi Sharma, Junior and Senior Residents, Department of Community Medicine, PGI Chandigarh. The students were sensitized regarding disability and rehabilitation of persons with disability in the society. There are 27 million people in India with disability of one or the other kind and 2% of the Indian population is disabled, according to census data. The types of disabilities can be visual and hearing impairment, speech and movement impairment, mental retardation and mental illness. There are 2 million people in India with multiple disabilities. Rehabilitation of persons with disability can be in the form of assisted living devices such as hearing aids, prosthetic limbs, callipers, vision assisted devices etc. Social rehabilitation is done in the forms of schools for visually and mental impaired, reservations in education institutions and government jobs and special provisions in public spaces. The teachers of the school were also sensitized about the measures they can take to make the school disabled friendly by health workers Kamal and Mrs Meena.
