International Workshop on Zoonotic Parasites:PGI Compiles Data To Fight Parasitic Infections

Chandigarh 23rd April:-- The 1st international "ZooPa" workshop on
'Zoonotic waterborne/ foodborne parasites' enters its second day on
Thursday at PGI, Chandigarh. This workshop kicks-off a three-year
educational exchange project between India and Norway, in which the
Department of Medical Parasitology, PGIMER, Chandigarh is the Indian
partner and the Department of Food Safety and Infection Biology,
Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) is the Norwegian partner.
During the second day of the workshop, group discussions were
conducted about risk ranking of foodborne parasites in the context of
the Indian scenario.
Prof. Rakesh Sehgal, Head of the Department of Medical Parasitology,
PGIMER, highlighted the medical importance of zoonotic waterborne/
foodborne parasites. He emphasized that over 60 % of human pathogens
are considered to originate from animals. Prof. Lucy Robertson from
Norway discussed the concept of 'One Health and One Planet' – in which
human infections, animal infections, and environmental factors are
considered together. The importance of zoonotic infections, that is,
the infections which are transmitted from animals to humans, were also
addressed. The department of Medical Parasitology is also conducting
research with their Norwegian and Spanish partners to investigate the
effect of climatic change in transmission of waterborne parasites.
PGIMER is also compiling the data of routine stool examination for
parasitic ova/cyst for the last 50 years. The data will be analysed in
relation to climatic data and will be useful for modelling the affects
of climate change on transmission and in formulating guidelines for
the control of intestinal parasitic infections. Water samples will
also be collected and analyzed for parasites by specialized
techniques; as contaminated water is a common source of infection.
Globally, contaminated water is a serious problem that can cause
severe illness, disability and even death. Common water-related
diseases caused by parasites include amebiasis, cryptosporidiosis and
giardiasis. People become infected with these diseases when they
swallow water that has been contaminated by these parasites. Proper
sanitation and hygiene are essential for prevention of waterborne
illness.India possess a favourable environment for the transmission of
both known and novel diseases between animals and humans as it
harbours the second largest human populations and one of the world's
greatest densities of tropical livestock. Nevertheless, zoonoses
research and control in India is fragmented and systematic studies are
lacking. Zoonotic waterborne/ foodborne parasites can infect large
numbers of common people in India. Throughout India, problems of
foodborne parasitic zoonoses differ because of varied food habits.
Other factors such as unhygienic living conditions, lack of education,
poor personal hygiene and poverty also contribute to the dissemination
of parasitic infections. This workshop aims to promote integrated
zoonotic disease prevention and control among the medical and
veterinarian students. Many food outbreaks can be linked to zoonotic
parasites. Many different types of food can be contaminated by
parasites such as raw vegetables, meat, fish and dairy products. Many
factors in the modern world may promote transmission of foodborne
pathogens, including changes in dietary habits (such as eating raw
produce and salads), increased international travel, and greater
import of different food products. The ZooPa project is funded through
the UTFORSK programme of the Norwegian Centre for International
Cooperation in Education (SIU). As well as this first workshop, the
project will include further workshops in Chandigarh and Norway,
"hands-on" practical courses, and scientific exchanges. In subsequent
workshops hands-on training will be provided for the detection of
parasites in water and food samples. This will help in establishing an
epidemiological link between animal source and human infection, so
that preventive and control measures can be taken.

Need To Create Awareness Against Drug Addiction - Karam Chand

Chandigarh 23rd April:-- Drug abuse is not new but matters have been
getting worse in recent months as almost a whole generation of young
people is being lost to a menace that has literally shattered the
physical and mental health of Punjab's youth. As many as 67 percent of
rural households in Punjab had at least one drug addict in the family.
And the most drug addicts belong to the 16-to-35 age group, indicating
the high vulnerability of young people. Against this background
Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Punjab State Council organized
an awareness session on Drug De addiction for the students of
Government ITI Nawanshahr.
Karam Chand Principal ITI Nawanshahr said that there is great need to
create awareness among the youth about the devastating effects of
consuming drugs. Paramjit Singh Sachdeva, Co-Convener, CII CSR Panel,
CII Punjab State Council & Managing Director Sachdeva Stocks Pvt Ltd
briefed the students about the CSR activities CII is doing in the
state and urged the students to keep themselves away from the drugs.
Dr Ajay Bagga, Senior Medical Officer from Hosiharpur, explained in
length about the causes, ill effects and preventive measures about
drugs. He advised the students that they should always focus on their
studies and should not deviate themselves from their goals. Jaspal

To Provide Pleasant Feel, Super Model & Model Polling Stations Will Be Set Up: Sidhu

Mohali 23rd April:-- In a bid to attract voters to the polling booth &
to give a festive look to the electoral exercise during Lok Sabha
elections on 30 April, district administration has planned to set up a
few Super model & Model polling stations for the first time in the
district. For this to enhance the voter experience, some special
arrangements are being made which will include Voter Assistance Booth
with label "May I Help You". Actions in this regard have been
initiated. Explaining this District Electoral Officer-cum-Deputy
Commissioner Tejinder Pal Singh Sidhu said that to enhance voting
experience & to provide pleasant "Look & Feel" 122 Super model polling
stations & 122 model polling stations will be setup in the district.
Tejinder Pal Singh Sidhu said that the motive of setting up model
polling stations is to boost voter turnout and to attract the voters
by offering pleasant & comfortable experience. He said that we are
making all efforts for conducting peaceful election & providing
pleasant atmosphere so that voters are not supposed to wait in queues.
He said that special care will be taken for queue management, as
priority will be given to patients, pregnant women, old people and
differently-abled persons for voting. NCC & NSS volunteers from
schools & colleges will assist for the same. He said that keeping in
view the hot weather conditions, drinking water will be served in
queues to the voters waiting for their turn. Special arrangements like
carpeting & sheds will also be made available at polling stations. He
said that prominently-displayed sign boards conveying the route for
polling booths will also be provided. Besides these there will be
proper arrangement of lightening at polling station. Basic
infrastructure like modern furniture including chair & tables will
also be provided to polling staff and arrangement for thoroughly
cleaned toilets will also be ensured. He said that to provide a new
look, the voting compartments will be made of fibre glass. Besides
this arrangements for some chairs inside polling booth will also be
made for voter if suddenly some one feels discomfort/ difficulty in
standing in the queue. He said to enhance the voting experience;
feedback will be sought from the voters. District Electoral Officer
said that for the first time the initiative has been made to motivate
the first time young voters, as appreciation certificates will be give
to the first time voters at polling booth. He said that these
appreciation certificates will be given by Block Level Officers.
Besides this, gifts etc. will also be distribute to motivate the
voters. He said that special arrangement like wheel chair etc. will be
made available at polling booth for physically disabled voters.

to share their experiences to broaden the perspectives and approach
towards better healthcare delivery in the society. She emphasized
that participants should avail this opportunity to take to their

Election Duty Certificates Will Be Provide To Polling Staff for Casting Their Votes: Sidhu

Mohali 22nd April:-- The Election Duty Certificates will be issued to
polling staff deputed for elections, to be held on 30 April. These
certificates could be obtained from the office of Assistant Returning
Officers. Stating this, District Electoral Officer-cum-Deputy
Commissioner Tejinder Pal Singh Sidhu said that district
administration has ensured each & every effort in view of elections &
the issuance of election duty certificates is being done so that
polling staff could also use their constitutional right to cast vote.
Tejinder Pal Singh Sidhu said that to conduct fair & transparent
elections in the district, appropriate directions has been issued to
the department chiefs & executive officers to ensure the voting
exercise by polling staff. He said that polling staff could cast their
votes through various methods. He said that polling officer could cast
his vote in concerned polling station by showing Election Duty
Certificate, provided the polling officer is deputed in the same
constituency. He said that in case the polling officer is deputed in
different constituency then he could use Ballet Paper for casting the
vote. He said, many a time, it was noticed that polling officers are
not properly aware about the Election Duty Certificates & use of
Ballet Papers, due to the fact they feel unable to cast their votes.
District Electoral Officer said that direction in this regard have
already been issued to the department heads & officers concerned to
make aware the polling staff, about the use of their constitutional
right during election duty. He said that every department chief has to
ensure the timely submission of properly filled "Form-12-A" by the
polling officers, so that further necessary action in this regard
could be initiated.

CGC Jhanjeri Holds Placement Drives:15 MBA & B.Tech Students Selected at 2.5 Lakh Package

Mohali 22nd April:--A joint placement drives for the students of MBA &
B.Tech students has been organized by the Chandigarh Group of Colleges
(CGC), Jhanjeri. About 146 candidates from different colleges
participated in the placement drive. 15 Students were selected by the
two companies, in which Religare Enterprises company selected 7 MBA
students whereas Main Tech Technologies selected 8 B.Tech students
with the pay packages upto Rs. 2.5 Lakh p.a. plus various incentives.
Explaining the policy of CGC regarding placements, S. Rashpal Singh
Dhaliwal, President, CGC said that the students of all our colleges at
Landran, Gharuan & Jhanjeri are made to appear for placement drives of
various companies. Even the students of other colleges are also given
this opportunity if the concerned companies permit.
Dr. G.D. Bansal, Director General CGC said that in the drive by Main
Tech Technologies apart from the students of our own campuses, the
students of YCOE, Punjabi University, UCOE, Punjabi University, ACET,
R.I.T. Roorkee, Rayat & Bahra, Ropar & SCET, Saharanpur also
participated.
