Sanjay Dutt’s Torbaaz is an Emotional Thriller about the War-Affected Afghan Kids

Chandigarh Dec. 12, 2020:- Grave, intense and emotionally charged, Sanjay Dutt's Torbaaz, which released on Netflix this Friday, has created a lot of buzz on social media already and is receiving rave reviews, owing to its unique storyline told in an extremely compassionate manner.

Directed by Girish Malik and written by Girish himself with Bharti Jakhar, Torbaaz is produced by Malik along with Puneet Singh, Raju Chaddha and Rahul Mittra. The film has been co-produced by Amardeep S Reen.

Girish Malik and Puneet Singh have together produced over 1000 hours of TV content and content-based cinema (under their production house, Clapstem Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.)

Which have garnered lots of accolades globally? One of their most critically-acclaimed films is JAL, which has won the National Film Award for Best Special Effects in 2013 and was even shortlisted in the advance list for contention for Best Picture Category and Best Original Score at the Oscars. Puneet is also the co-owner of Punjab De Sher team of Celebrity Cricket League (CCL).

As far as Torbaaz is concerned, its protagonist is Naseer, played by Sanjay Dutt, a retired Army Doctor, who returns to Afghanistan – the country where he lost his family due to suicide bombing. It is a story of beautiful and innocent people who live in a war-torn country. The narrative starts in 2007 when children as young as 10, were brainwashed in the name of Jihad and used as suicide bombers to accomplish terrorists' missions. As a result, today Afghanistan has become a country where thousands of children have lost their families and loved ones in the never-ending war and are now staying in refugee camps.

Naseer decides to bring the children on the right track through cricket. The camp has all sorts of children divided by their ethnicity, caste and class. But they are united by their love for the game of cricket. Along with Naseer, the group trains hard and forms a team of their own. But would they have a smooth ride ahead with the threat of Taliban looming large upon them? Watch Torbaaz to know more.

One of the best parts about the film which is being liked by the audience is that despite its grave storyline, the film's story is told in an extremely engaging manner with a lot of tongue-in-cheek humor to make a point. This, coupled with terrific performances by the starcast (Sanjay Dutt, Nargis Fakhri, Rahul Dev and the child actors), the cinematography and commendable direction, make Torbaaz a winner all the way.

Girish Malik, who has produced (along with Puneet Singh) and directed over 1000 hours of TV shows, docu-dramas and around 50 ad films said that Torbaaz takes a novel approach and attempts to highlight the fact that it's the children of today who are going to shape the future of this world tomorrow. The warm relationship that develops between Nasser and the kids is the highlight of the movie besides uncovering some dark truths.

He added that we had to do a lot of research for Torbaaz to make the story factually correct besides being a highly emotional one. He is glad that the film has been touching the right chords with a wider audience – those who love emotional dramas and those who are fond of thrillers are loving the film alike.

Producer Puneet Singh feels that the film's unique approach in highlighting a tough issue in a compassionate way, is what makes it a cut above the rest.
