By 121 News

Chandigarh 27th November:- Prof Yogesh Chawla, Director PGI will inaugurate the yearly update and Continuing medical education program in Rheumatology, themed ''Current paradigms in Arthritis'' on 29th November 2015 for MD residents and General practitioners and paramedical personnel involved in care of patients with common rheumatological problems.

The Department of Internal Medicine, PGI, Chandigarh is organizing the CME.  Dr Subhash Varma, Head, Internal Medicine, PGI will preside over the function. The CME will cover common rheumatological illnesses like Rheumatoid arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis and Gout that will be covered by Current and past Professors of Rheumatology from SGPGI, Lucknow, AIIMS New Delhi and PGI Chandigarh. Dr Varun Dhir, Associate Professor, Internal Medicine is the Organizing Secretary.

The USP of this CME is that it will be interactive and discuss case scenarios. The discussions will be of half an hour slots in between where patients from the time they enter the clinic to their examination and finally investigations and diagnosis will be discussed.  This will simulate a real patient who comes to a doctor with musculoskeletal pain.

Musculoskeletal diseases and pain has a high prevalence in the society.  Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common arthritis affecting almost one in 100 people - it is often neglected as vague pains or sometimes to the contrary over diagnosed just because a rheumatoid factor is positive. A new test called CCP is now available for this.
Ankylosing spondylitis is a common arthritis affecting the spine - it presents in young people with a backache which is more in mornings with lot of stiffness and improves with movement unlike other back aches. It can over time lead to a bent posture and reduction of neck movement.
