Secretary Medical Education & Research Visit GMCH, RIMH & Regional Trauma Centre

Chandigarh 17th July:-- Secretary Medical Education & Research (SMER) Anil Kumar along with Director Principal, GMCH and representatives of Urban Planning and Engineering Department of Chandigarh Administration, visited Block-E of GMCH, Regional Institute of Mentally Handicapped (RIMH), Sector 31, Residential Area of GMCH in Sector 48 and site of Regional Trauma Centre, Sector 53, Chandigarh, here today.

First of all, SMER visited Block-E to monitor the progress of construction. He urged everybody to hasten the progress of the construction and get Block E functional at the earliest. It was also decided that Regional Institute of Allied Health Sciences (RIAHS) should not come up in GMCH complex in Sector 32.  The area behind the Block-E should be developed as a Sports -cum-recreational complex with some provision for car parking. This is important in view of the possibility of increase of MBBS admissions from 50 to 100 every year.  It was pointed out that a state-of-the-art Sports-cum-recreational complex be considered to be constructed in this area which could be similar to the Sports complex that has been established in Manipal University, Manipal.  SMER suggested that facilities established by Manipal University, Manipal can be inspected and a visit to Manipal University, Manipal be planned in the near future for this purpose.

SMER also visited Regional Institute of Mentally Handicapped (RIMH), Sector 31, Chandigarh.  The architect and engineering department pointed out that an area of approximately two acres close to the road dividing Sector 31 from Industrial Area, Phase-II, very close to Asha Deep Building and the roundabout can be considered for making the academic block of RIAHS.

The team also visited sector 48, residential area of GMCH.  Two sites were proposed for RIAHS.The team also visited sector 53 Regional Trauma Centre area to explore the feasibility of setting up of RIAHS close to this area.  SMER wanted to have a look at the layout from the department of Urban Planning for this area which would be provided by Department of Urban Planning.The final decision regarding construction of RIAHS complex-academic as well as residential will be taken after reviewing the pros & cons of the above mentioned sites.
