A small business might use job or batch production to provide a personalized or distinctive product.  However, if the product is intended for much larger, mass markets, then alternative methods of production may be required in order for the product to be produced efficiently.  A key production method in these circumstances is flow production Flow production involves a continuous movement of items through the production process. This means, when one task is finished, the next task must start immediately.  Therefore, the time taken on each task must be the same.

Man Mohan Singh, Chairman, CII Chandigarh Council accentuated, said that to gain a competitive edge in today's marketplace, an organisation must embrace new ideas and processes and requires constant improvement. Manufacturing Excellence is an imperative tool that leads an organisation to the path of competitiveness. An efficient flow-through manufacturing system will eliminate waste, minimize work in process, optimize floor space, reduce lead-time, and improve customer response time, leading to reduced costs and greater production capacity."

The aim of organising workshop on Single Minute Exchange of Dies was to familiarize the industry members with the approach required for the efficient reduction of changeover times and acquisition of the way of thinking required for introduction.
