Chandigarh, Jan.17, 2025:-Cervical cancer often referred to as silent killer for a reason. It progresses stealthily, often without obvious symptoms until it reaches an advanced stage, but if detected early through screening, vaccination and healthy lifestyle can be preventive.
While emphasising the early detection, Dr. Gautam Goyal associate director medical oncology Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali said that cervical cancer develops in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus. Most cases are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), a common infection that spreads through skin-to-skin contact, including during sexual activity.
Emphasising on the ways to protect from cervical cancer, Dr. Goyal further said that many women are unaware they carry this virus until abnormalities are detected during routine screenings unfortunately, by the time symptoms such as abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain, or unusual discharge appear, the cancer has often progressed to an advanced stage.
The good news is that most cervical cancer cases can be prevented by simple measures like vaccination and regular check-ups, which make a huge difference, Dr. Goyal also emphasised the need for vigilance and regular health checks.
He said that Cervical cancer often doesn't show symptoms early on, which is why routine check-ups are critical. If someone experiences unusual bleeding, pelvic pain, or abnormal discharge, these signs should never be ignored—consult a doctor immediately. Following simple preventive steps like regular screenings, vaccination, and adopting a healthy lifestyle can offer strong protection against this disease.
He further recommended that women take charge of their health by starting screenings at age 21 and getting vaccinated between ages 9 and 26.
