PGI Celebrates National Safe Motherhood Day

Chandigarh 11th April:- The National Safe motherhood day was celebrated by Department of community medicine, School of Public Health, PGI in collaboration with Civil Hospital, sector 45, Chandigarh Administration on the theme 'Role of husbands in safe maternity care' in Burail. Through a community mobilization program around 1000 pamphlets were distributed to residents of Burail village and ANMs of the area were asked to inform the residents with special priority to pregnant women, their husbands and family members to attend the program. About 80 residents including pregnant women, their husbands and family members, attended it.

Dr. Urvi Sharma, Senior Resident of community medicine, PGI welcomed the audience. Dr. Krishna Choudhary, SMO incharge, Civil hospital-45, informed about the facilities available in civil hospital sector 45 for safe motherhood like 24X7 labour room and facilities for essential new born care with dedicated staff, free ambulance and lab service etc. Dr. Madhu Gupta, additional professor of community medicine, PGI, talked about preparation required at home before going for delivery, danger signs during pregnancy (bleeding per vagina, rupture of membranes, severe anemia etc) and the role of husbands in safe motherhood. Dr. Kavita Chavan, MO Gynae, addressed the audience regarding safe delivery (delivery by skilled birth attendant i.e., doctor or Nurse) and post natal care. This was followed by a role play by staff nurses and ANMs directed by Dr. Nikita Sharma, Junior Resident, of community medicine, PGIMER, titled "Bacche ka janm Hospital ke sang." Community leader cum VHSC member, Rajinder Singh Rana as well as Councilor representative, Karamveer Singh also addressed the audience regarding importance of safe motherhood and role of husbands. The program was sponsored by Punjab National Bank, Chandigarh.
