Chandigarh, Jan.23, 2024:-A fine knock of 68 from down ten batter – Nishunk Birla helped host Chandigarh to avoid an innings defeat against Saurashtra at the ongoing Col CK Nayudu trophy match being played at GMSSS-26 on Tuesday.
In reply to Saurashtra's 285, UT boys collapsed at mere 117 in their first innings followed by yet another miserable show with 213/8 at the end of third day play. The host team has a lead of 45 runs now.
Earlier, Chandigarh added only 27 runs to its overnight score of 90/5 and the team was reduced to 117 runs. Skipper Arjun Azad (67) was top scorer for the side while Gajjar Sammar (5/32) from the opposition camp was the pick of the bowlers. Neel Pandya (2/22) and P Rana (2/25) took two wickets each.
Trailing by 168 runs, local lads again got off to a dismal start as Gajjar Sammar (4/95) did the major damage. The team looked struggling at 35/3 when Nehal Pajni (9), Arjun Azad (20) and Nipun Sharda (1) went cheaply. Gajjar continued to produce havoc as the team was reduced to 89/7 at one stage. But Birla made a partnership of 55 runs with Gagan Verma, taking the score to 144. Neel Pandaya dismissed Verma (30). Later, Birla proved vital in another vital partnership of unbeaten 69 runs with Gurtaj Singh Bains. Unbeaten Nishunk Birla had scored 69 runs by smashing 12 boundaries while Bains remained not out on 40 runs before the stumps were drawn.
