By 1 2 1 News Reporter

Chandigarh 30th September: --- Department of Social Welfare, Chandigarh organized a orientation programme on Gender, Child Rights & Social Sensitization for Councillors of Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh at UT Guest here today. Subhash Chawla, Mayor, Chandigarh was the Hon'ble Chief Guest.

In the inauguration address he stated that Gender discrimination is not acceptable. There is need of awareness of schemes related to women in communities and for this purpose social welfare department has to take lead to converge with different departments for the benefit of society. Declining child sex ratio is a serious issue which should be tackled.

On the topic of Gender Sensitization, Prof. Sherry Sabbarwal, Department of Sociology, Panjab University Chandigarh addressed the audience wherein she informed that gender role socialization takes place from earliest childhood through adolescence and throughout all social interactions in which we participate. At an early age, children develop stereotypical conceptions of both genders, and begin to use these conceptions to organize their knowledge and behavior. Children learn proper behavior for girls and boys through parents, the media, peer groups, and other sources of socialization. Gender sensitization does not mean men v/s women. It means to aware women about their rights. Women must know her rights. Many males believe if women asks for her rights then the rights of males will be reduced. But the reality is, if women are aware of her rights, men would get more advantages. Every woman should raise her voice against discrimination. Women should get involved in agitations. Need to educate and sensitize girls about the things that are right & wrong for her.Director, Social Welfare, Sh. Rajesh Jogpal made presentations on women laws and SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act 1989, crime against women and women centric laws, the sexual harassment of women at workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2013.

HALLMARK STUDENTS ENACT PLAY ‘NAARI NARAYANI’ ON ‘PLIGHT OF A HOUSEWIFE’

By 1 2 1 News Reporter

Chandigarh 30th September: --- The housewife is someone who is taken for granted by everyone in a typical Indian family and this was the highlight of a play presented by eighteen talented actors of Hallmark Public School, Panchkula's, theatre department. The poignant play, 'Naari Narayani', based on the plight of the Indian homemaker attracted a lot of attention of visitors, during staging of the 'Nukkad Natak' in Elante Mall Chandigarh.

Presented by the students in age group of 10-15 years the play was directed by Abhishek Sharma and showcased the travails a housewife, who has to go through a lot of subjugation by her husband & mother-in-law among others in her family, despite slogging day in and day out doing odd jobs, cooking food and completing chores considered unimportant by all. The mental and physical stress that a homemaker has to suffer was shown by the students through use of different encounters between her and family members.

Jivtesh Garg, Director, Hallmark public School, said that in India we pay a lot of lip service to the need for respecting a woman, but on the ground the reality is just the opposite. We equate a woman to a 'Devi', however we treat her poorly. After marriage a girl has to undergo tremendous pressure from all quarters and she is not even thanked for all the work she does, to keep the family happy and together. Our students tried to show this side of the story today.   Symbolism was used effectively in the 10 minutes play. The housewife tries to eat her food but house work and continuous nagging do not allow her to have even lunch. The play was made interesting through enactment by two characters – Ustad played by Devkaran and Jamura played by Paras. The use of music at apt junctures also generated attention of onlookers' at the Mall. The music and songs were delivered by Minka. The lead character of the housewife was played by Mehar, Jatin did the role of her husband and the role of Mother-in –law was enacted by Rashmi.

There is an immediate need to understand and bring about a balance in cost intensive architecture and labour intensive architecture. Lauding the PHD Chamber's initiative, Kaur said that such initiatives go a long way in understanding the nuances and details of the trade.

The Chief Architect was speaking during the conference on "Architecture, Building Materials and Technologies" organised by PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Indian Institute of Architects (IIA), Chandigarh-Punjab Chapter at Himachal Bhawan, Chandigarh, on the second day of the three day exhibition on architecture, building materials and technologies "ArchiBuild 2013".

Earlier speaking on the occasion, veteran architect, S.D.Sharma, noted that science and technology are being involved in Architecture in a great way these days. He said that in the present competitive scenario, the architects have to face tough competition not only from the foreign architects but the non- qualified architects as well, not to leave behind the competition among the qualified professional architects themselves.

While delving into the details of the nuances of architecture, Sanjay Kanvinde and Tanuja Kanvinde from Kanvinde Rai and Chowdhury said, that it is very important to take care of the intangible subtleties of a design to give a human feel and touch to the whole product of architecture.

Taking part in the deliberations, Ar. Sanjay Goel, said, that non architects practice architecture without sensitivity and responsibility towards the society. These people are not true professionals and neither do they have the intricate knowledge of technicalities that a qualified architect has.  And those who are not registered are violating the norms and standards of architecture in our country, which is derogatory to the profession.

Rural Veterinary Officers to boycott work from Oct 1

By 1 2 1 News Reporter

Chandigarh 28th September:--- In a major setback to the Punjab Government, 400 Rural Veterinary Officers (RVOs') working in Punjab's 582 Civil Veterinary Hospitals in Rural Areas have decided to boycott work related to Artificial Insemination with AI straws provided by Punjab's Animal Husbandry Department. It is noteworthy that the veterinary doctors had threatened that if their demand of a separate directorate under the Rural Development & Panchayats Ministry, to govern issues related to the RVOs', was not acceded to by the Punjab Government, they will stop accepting AI straws provided by the Animal Husbandry department from October 1, 2013.

According to Dr Navdeep S. Khinda, President, RVOA, to avoid inconvenience to farmers, RVOs' had given adequate time to Zila Parishads (ZPs') for making alternate arrangements to store and disperse AI straws. Unfortunately the ZPs' have not taken any measures and we have no choice other than boycotting taking AI from Animal Husbandry department. The responsibility of loss to farmers is now of Rural Development and Panchayats Ministry.

Before this decision the officers' had only stopped reporting to Animal Husbandry Department. The decision of boycotting AI work by RVOA is slated to hit the artificial insemination work which has been taken up quite aggressively by the Punjab government in rural Punjab. Says Dr. Puneet Malhotra, General Secretary, RVOA, "The Animal Husbandry department makes us toil hard on its projects in rural Punjab and when their work is done, they cold shoulder us on the issue of making provisions for financial aid to resurrect the ailing infrastructure in Civil Veterinary Hospitals."

The RVOs' feel that only a separate Directorate will resolve their problems. RVOs' have been recruited under the Punjab Rural Veterinary Panchayati Raj Act's (Group A) Service Rules, but no appointment has been done at either the district or state level. Due to this the promotions of RVOs' is non-existent. Problems like delayed salaries, non commencement of service book, non opening of CPF and PRAN accounts, unequal salary levels vis-a-vis districts in accordance with quantum and profile of work etc. also are the bane of RVOs'. RVOA has already taken up the issue with the Rural Development Minister and other top officials but their demand for a separate Directorate has fallen on deaf ears.
