Chandigarh 25th March:- In the course of development from a developing country to an industrialized society, adaptation to westernized life style is making India's population more vulnerable to suffer from low back pain (LBP). LBP arises when the muscles of the lower back are under stress as this is where most twisting, turning or bending occurs. Low back pain at any point of their life affects almost 85-90% of people. However, LBP can be relieved through simple measures such as exercises, on-site ergonomic modification and lifestyle changes.
Keeping this in mind the Department of Anaesthesia & Department of Community Medicine, PGIMER, Chandigarh have taken a lead in organizing an ICMR seminar on Low Back Pain and its management in the auditorium of the Advanced Eye Centre, PGI, Chandigarh.
Dr. Babita Ghai (Prof. Department of Anaesthesia); Dr. Amarjeet Singh (Prof. School of Public Health); and Dr. Neha Chanana (PhD Research Scholar- School of Public Health) were the Organizing Secretary, Convener and Co-Convener respectively. Post-doctoral fellow- Dr. Jaideep Kumar and Research scholar- Dr. Yudhvir Singh coordinated the activities of the seminar.
Dr. Babita Ghai inaugurated the seminar by highlighting the role of incorrect postures in causing low back pain and major role of exercises in preventing and managing this condition. Other experts from various departments of PGIMER, Chandigarh viz. Dr. Shifali K Sharma (Associate Professor, Department of Internal Medicine); Dr. Vishal Kumar (Assistant Prof., Department of Orthopaedic Surgery) and Pradip Sarkar (Senior Physiotherapist), Dr. Adarsh Kohli (Prof. Dept. of Psychiatry) highlighted the role of their respective fields in treatment and prevention of low back pain. Dr. Deepika Bansal (Associate Prof., NIPER, Mohali) discussed about the various questionnaires available for assessment of pain and disability associated with low back pain.
Approximately 70 participant including employees from administrative division of PGIMER, GMCH-32 and various nursing professionals, students and general public attended the seminar.
The seminar was a learning and awareness platform for employees, students as well as laypersons from various medical institutes regarding management of low back pain through simple measures including posture correction and lifestyle modification.
