Chandigarh 10th March:- Workers of Punjab Youth Congress (PYC) headed by its President Amarpreet Singh Lally took out a protest march against Centre's favouring Punjab's water to be shared through the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal with neighbouring state, Haryana. To express his solidarity with the cause, PPCC Chief, Capt Amrinder Singh also reached and addressed the youth brigade. The March began from Punjab Congress Bhawan, Sector 15 which was destined to reach Punjab Assembly complex. But the activists who were silently carrying out the March were stopped by the Police adjacent to Congress Bhawan only. Activists of PYC were attacked by water cannons and were lathicharged. Many of them including Amarpreet Singh Lally received injuries. Most of them were detained by Police on the spot.
While exposing the doublespeak of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) over SYL, Amarpreet Singh Lally said that central government is favouring Haryana in the Supreme Court, which is not in the favour of Punjab and its farmers. The Centre has betrayed Punjab by opposing its stand on water-sharing and supporting Haryana. Akali Dal is part of the government and they have forgotten the promises made to people of Punjab. If Badals are concerned about the farmers of the state then they should snap its ties with its ally Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Adding to it, he said that the Congress government has always taken decisions in the interest of Punjab and its people. The congress government in 2004 had scrapped the water sharing agreements with neighbouring states and had refused to give any water to other states, especially Haryana. We will not allow Punjab's water to be shared through the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal with neighbouring Haryana. Punjab is not in a condition to share even a drop of water with others.
Large number of activists also reached Police station in sector 39 and sat on Dharna. They raised slogans and expressed solidarity over not sharing the water of with the neighbouring state, Haryana.
