Dr. Manuj Wadhwa said that arthritis affects over 15%, approximately 180 million people in India, which is higher than many well-known diseases. While much has been said about high incidence of diabetes, hypertension, cancer and HIV in India, the recent studies suggest that osteoarthritis beats them all to claim the number 1 slot among ailments in the country.

Talking about the way arthritis is crippling the young, Dr Wadhwa said that contrary to the misconception that arthritis only affects elderly this disorder is increasingly found in the younger population. Earlier, patients around 65 years and above suffered from arthritis and underwent surgeries. But now the younger ones in age group of 40-45 years, who are in their golden years, are increasingly turning up for surgery. Higher levels of stress coupled with modern day lifestyles are increasing incidence of arthritis.

Talking about growing incidence of arthritis in Punjab, Dr Manuj Wadhwa stated that state has around 30 lakhs arthritis patients and it is increasing. There are more than 5 lakhs patients with advanced stages of arthritis, of which 50,000 would require immediate surgery. He remarked that obesity coupled with increasing sedentary lifestyle has made Punjabis vulnerable to arthritis. He advised Punjabis to think twice while relishing those greasy paranthas, makhan, ghee etc. These not only add to extra pounds around your waist, but also to the pain you feel while squatting and sitting.
