CII organises Session on ‘Respiratory Disorders’ for a Healthier Workforce

Chandigarh 27th January:- Confederation of Indian Industry Chandigarh Council in association with Dr Reddy's Foundation for Health Education (DRFHE) organised a session on 'Respiratory Disorders' for a healthier workforce at JREW Engineering Limited, Mohali.

Speaking at the session, Dr Zafar Ahmed, Pulmonologist, Fortis Hospital shared his expertise on 'Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases' (COPD) which are quite prevalent these days. COPD is a type of obstructive lung disease characterised by chronically poor airflow with symptoms such as symptoms include shortness of breath, cough, and sputum production. Smoking is the leading cause for COPD along with air pollution, occupational intake of emissions, genetics and exacerbations. Some of the major ailments include asthma, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and tuberculosis.

He emphasised that certain lifestyle changes can drastically reduce the severity of COPD. Cessation of smoking, exercising, hygiene, proper sleep and healthy eating habits can be very instrumental for the long term health of the lungs. He stressed that Asthma can be prevented by avoiding allergens and using inhalers which deliver the drug directly to the lungs.

 He stated that obesity is one of the major causes for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and can be dealt effectively through exercise and weight reduction. Another COPD disease tuberculosis, can be avoided by good hygienic practices and can be treated free of charge at various Government dispensaries.

Rajiv Chawla, GM Finance, JREW Engineering Limited, Mohali said that it is very important for an employer to look at the health issues of his employees and to create a healthy environment at work place.
