Chandigarh 21st November:- As part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations of DM (Neonatology) program at PGIMER, a workshop was conducted on "Quality Improvement- preventing healthcare associated infections". The workshop was conducted by Dr Gautham Suresh from USA and Dr Sandesh Shivananda from Canada. Over 50 delegates from various parts of the country attended. They included doctors and nurses. The workshop was highly interactive, with group discussions, exercises.
During the workshop experts emphasized the need to accurately collect and graphically represent data on infections; to define what is a sudden shift in infection rates and a trend in rates over time. They taught the delegates to construct what is called a "fish-bone diagram" that helps doctors to identify causes and sub-causes of hospital acquired infections. They showed how solutions can be identified once a detailed causal diagram is constructed. They used managerial tools like process mapping to find out at which stages of a simple procedure, like inserting an intravenous canula, things can go wrong and infection may be introduced.
Drs Suresh and Shivananda talked about "care bundles", ie a cluster of changes brought in simultaneously to decrease hospital acquired infections. They illustrated several PDSA (Plan-Do-Study-Act) cycles.
