NATIONAL WORKSHOP ON CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY: Importance of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring of Drug Levels Discussed

Chandigarh 26th March:-- The 3rd day of the ongoing National Workshop on Clinical Pharmacology, in the department of Pharmacology, PGI, Chandigarh, began with hands on practical demonstrations on Pharmacodynamic exercises involving CVS and CNS besides the pharmacokinetic exercise problem solving using Excel by the residents and faculty members of the department.  This was followed by a presentation and discussion on the management of clinical trial data by Dr. K S Raghavan, person credited with pioneering role in bringing many important drugs to Indian market through clinical trials carried out under him.

 

 Dr. C S Gautam, Professor and Head, Pharmacology, Government Medical College, Chandigarh spoke about scientific fraud and misconduct in the field of medical research. He cited the examples from within and outside country which bring bad name to research. Emeritus Professor P.L. Sharma enlightened the audience about various ethical issues involved in conduct of clinical trials. Dr. Urmila Thatte, Head of clinical pharmacology, KEM, Mumbai discussed about the importance of therapeutic drug monitoring of drug levels. She spoke from her experience in the therapeutic drug monitoring clinic at KEM, Mumbai.  She also took a presentation on pharmacogenetic studies and stressed upon the concept and importance of personalized medicine in healthcare. Dr. Kishore Chandra, an industry expert spoke on economics of modern healthcare, an area acquiring importance in health related policy making. The workshop wound up with hands on exercises in toxicology and their discussion.
