PGI Celebrates ‘Dietetics Day’

Chandigarh 10th January: 'Dietetics Day' was celebrated by The Department  of Dietetics, PGI by organizing an exhibition in Advanced Cardiac Centre for patients and general public titled 'Heart Healthy Living – The Dietary Way'.  This was inaugurated by Director, PGI Prof. Y.K. Chawla and attended by senior faculty members and staff of PGI.  The exhibition started with the six simple steps to maintain a healthy heart.  There were charts depicting role of breast feeding as a strong foundation for a healthy heart.  Some charts showed the ways to avoid childhood obesity which included emphasis on outdoor activities for children, a no to junk food and parental guidance for healthy eating.  Handouts for healthy school tiffin recipes were distributed to the parents.

Healthy diet plays an important role in maintaining heart health.  This was explained by imparting education on the positive role of fiber in whole grains, pulses, antioxidants present in coloured fruits and vegetables in maintaining heart health.  Information was given on types of fats and how much fats to be taken in daily life.  The role of monounsaturated fats, like olive oil, Rice bran oil, mustard oil were highlighted. The role of anti-inflammatory and heart protective omega-3 fats present in fish, flax seeds (Alsi) etc. was depicted.  Education was imparted on the importance of common Indian herbs and seeds e.g. Tulsi leaves, curry leaves, garlic, turmeric, pumpkin and sunflower seeds as anti-inflammatory agents protecting the heart.  Handouts were given to the general public for the same.
