Cryosurgery-New Ray of Hope for Cancer Patients

Mohali 07 June:-  Cancer, a deadly disease is on rise. According to a survey every year 1 lakh cancer patients are detected in India alone and at any given time there are around 3 million cases are known to be present .They are either on treatment, relapsed cases or the cancer survivors. According to survey in Punjab region only, presently there are near about 86 patients of cancer after 1 lakh population whereas 136 patients in Malwa region.

While speaking at the press conference at Ivy Hospital, Chinese Dr.  Feng Mu Cancer Specialist from Fuda cancer hospital Guangzao, China & Dr Kuljinder Singh Sodhi, Senior Cancer Specialist, IVY hospital said that this new treatment in the field of cancer employing 3C-P model has provided hope in the management of advanced cancers. This treatment is being widely practiced in China, Europe and more than 400 centers in US have now been able to find its way to India. Dr Kuljinder Singh Sodhi is one of the two Indian doctors who have been appointed as the member of Asian society of Cryosurgery. While talking to media persons at the moment Dr.sodhi said that most of 50% cases in India are diagnosed at advanced stage, where the treatment outcomes with the present traditional method of surgery chemotherapy or radiotherapy, which are not up to the mark because this disease can relapse again.

Dr. Kanwaldeep Kaur,Medical Director of Ivy Hospital said that this technique is a boon to cure cancer  in advanced stage,  even if the patients general condition is not good to undergo major surgery or when patient is having comorbidities like severe hypertension or diabetes or cardiac problems where surgery is very risky,  Cryosurgery can be done with relative ease and can provide a better outcome.

HOW IT WORKS :-

Cryosurgery technique employs using cold temperature delivered through small needles in the center of tumor to the temperature of-160 degrees causing freezing of the tumor cells. Dr Sodhi says in advanced cancers where even the patients general condition is not good to undergo major surgery or when patient is having comorbodities like severe hypertension or diabetes or cardiac problems where surgery is very risky, Cryosurgery can be done with relative ease. Most of the times it can be done under local anaesthesia and provide a better outcome. Another breakthrough in cancer is the use of targeted chemotherapy delivery. Traditionally chemotherapy is given through veins which then goes into the blood and not only destroys the cancer cells but also affects the normal organs in the body leading to side effects. Cancer microvessel intervention employs a technique through which cancer chemotherapy is delivered specifically to tumor by microcatheters directly identifying the artery supplying nutrition to the tumors. This not only leads to better cancer kill but also very minimal side effects.
