Mohali, July 22, 2025:- Doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali, successfully treated a 73-year-old male patient from Sundarnagar, Himachal Pradesh, diagnosed with tonsil cancer. The team of doctors led by Dr. Naresh Kumar Panda, Director of the Department of ENT, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali, performed an advanced minimally invasive robotic surgery.

The patient first came to Max Hospital, Mohali on June 17th with persistent throat pain and difficulty in swallowing food, common yet often overlooked symptoms of throat cancer.  A detailed medical evaluation was done by the ENT department that revealed a suspicious growth on the right tonsil. Followed by this, a biopsy was performed that confirmed tonsil cancer.

Speaking on the case, Dr. Naresh Kumar Panda, Director of the Department of ENT, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali, said that the tumor was localized and had not spread to the lymph nodes or distant parts of the body. Considering the tumor's deep location inside the throat, we decided to perform Transoral Robotic Surgery with Neck Dissection, using the Da Vinci XI Robotic System, and completely removed the tumor. This is a minimally invasive surgical approach for treating head and neck cancers. This advanced technique allows us to operate through the mouth, with better outcomes compared to traditional open surgeries. The surgery lasted approximately three hours, and the patient was discharged on June 21st.

Dr. Panda further said that the patient responded well post-surgery, started swallowing food within a week, and had returned to normal activities. Carcinoma of the tonsil is a type of head and neck cancer, often linked to smoking, alcohol use, or HPV infection. It may present with symptoms like sore throat, difficulty swallowing, ear pain, or a lump in the neck. Noticing symptoms early can help you get rid of cancer at the first stage before it metastasizes.

The successful completion of this complex case marks a significant milestone for the ENT Department at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali, reaffirming the hospital's commitment to cutting-edge technology, clinical excellence, and a patient-first approach.
