Chandigarh, July 22, 2025:-The Chandigarh Pradesh Congress Committee, led by its President H s Lucky, along with the Congress Councillors of the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh including Senior Deputy Mayor Jasbir Bunty, Deputy Mayor Taruna Mehta, Gurpreet gabi, Darshna Rani, Nirmala devi and sachin galav along with Senior leaders of the Congress party Yadvinder Mehta, Dilawar singh today submitted a memorandum to Municipal Commissioner Amit Kumar drawing his urgent attention to the unprecedented and alarming deterioration of road infrastructure across the city—particularly in areas under the jurisdiction of the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh.
It was conveyed to the Commissioner that this is perhaps the first time in the history of the Municipal Corporation that the condition of roads has deteriorated to such dismal levels. Roads that once exemplified Chandigarh's reputation for urban planning and high-quality infrastructure are now marked by deep potholes, broken stretches, uneven surfaces, and crumbling edges—posing serious risks to commuters and pedestrians alike.
Despite repeated complaints from residents, RWAs, and elected Councillors, no significant or visible effort has been made by the Municipal Corporation or administration to repair or relay the damaged roads in a timely and systematic manner. The monsoon has further aggravated the situation, leading to frequent waterlogging and accelerated erosion of already weakened surfaces in several sectors and colonies.
The Commissioner was apprised that some of the worst-affected areas include almost all internal sector roads of residential areas, which are riddled with potholes; Industrial Area Phase I and II, where broken and poorly maintained roads are hampering trade and daily movement; villages and colonies such as Dhanas, Mauli Jagran, Hallo Majra, Burail, Bapudham, Palsora, Ramdarbar, Indira Colony, Maloya, and Manimajra, which remain completely neglected; internal market roads, which are extremely unsafe for cyclists, two-wheelers, and the elderly; and main arterial roads, including those from Sector 26 Grain Market to the Transport Area, which are in a serious state of disrepair.
It is particularly disappointing that despite the allocation of hundreds of crores every year for road repairs and maintenance, the execution of these works remains grossly inadequate, mismanaged, and unaccountable. The public continues to suffer, while the Municipal Corporation's credibility is rapidly eroding.
In light of the above, the Congress party has submitted the following key demands for immediate and serious consideration. A comprehensive city-wide road condition survey must be conducted under the supervision of an independent technical body. Urgent repair and relaying of damaged roads, particularly in high-traffic and residential areas, must be undertaken on a war footing. There must be public disclosure of road repair tenders, sanctioned funds, work timelines, and completion status for the past three financial years. A dedicated grievance redressal helpline and online portal for road-related complaints should be established and monitored weekly by senior engineering officials. Additionally, strict accountability mechanisms for contractors and engineers involved in substandard road work must be implemented, including financial penalties and blacklisting where applicable.
Chandigarh was once considered a model city known for its visionary planning and well-maintained infrastructure. Sadly, the current state of its roads reflects administrative apathy and failure. It is a matter of deep concern not only for citizens but also for elected representatives committed to public welfare.
They urged the Municipal Commissioner to treat this matter with the seriousness it warrants and to initiate corrective action without further delay.
