Max Hospital organize Health Talk on ‘Management of Diabetes in the elderly’

By 121 News

Chandigarh 31st May:-Max Super Specialty Hospital (MSSH), Mohali today organized an interactive health talk on 'Management of Diabetes in the elderly'. Almost 100 senior citizens attended the talk.

Speaking during occasion, Dr S K Mathur, Sr. Consultant, Endocrinology, MSSH said that diabetes was a major lifestyle disease in India that has affected over 60 million people. The disease was a leading cause for heart attack, brain stroke, kidney failure and limb amputations. However this could be prevented by living a healthy lifestyle which included physical activity, healthy diet, refraining from alcohol and junk food. He pointed out that the special precautions were needed while treating diabetes in elderly. There was a golden rule, 'start low and go slow'. In another words, while starting treatment in elderly one should start treatment with small doses of anti diabetics. However the doses should be escalated slowly later on. This was important to avoid low blood sugar. Low blood sugar has a risk of increasing heart attacks and heart failure. This has been shown in large studies in last two-three years.

He informed further, diabetes in elderly were due to sudden fall of blood pressure and nervous imbalance. This situation could lead to sudden loss of consciousness, fall and injury. This should be carefully looked out among those who have long duration of diabetes besides who were on treatment with drugs that would increase urine output. This would also lead to low level of electrolytes in our body causing unconsciousness.

To simplify the tips for successful diabetes management, one should consider the situation in totality including status of heart, kidneys and nerves along with blood sugar. Diabetes should never be neglected because it was a slow killer disease. Regular monitoring of blood sugar could prevent the complications of diabetes. Regular checkup with doctor could give proper advice regarding lifestyle management and medication. It was our moral duty to educate our society about diabetes so that we could contribute towards diabetes prevention and healthy India, he asserted.

Book on Medico Legal Issues "Surrogacy" Releases

By 121 News

Chandigarh 29th May:- The book, Surrogacy:Medico Legal Issues, written by Advocate Gehna Vaishnavi and Dr Navneet Takkar was released by Hon'ble Justice Rajiv Narain Raina in PGI today.  Hon'ble Justice congratulated the authors and remarked that surrogacy is a new challenge faced by infertile couples and while looking at it from legal point of view it is equally important to understand that surrogacy involves real people and their emotions. Most important of all is the child who must be assured safety, citizenship and identity. Litigation's in this area are likely to grow exponentially in near future. The need for enacting laws is in dire need and draft Assisted Reproduction Technology (Regulations) bills, 2008, 2010 and 2013 are on the drawing boards of stakeholders and legislature. The regimen of law controlling medico-legal stand points in surrogacy has to be put in place to prevent unregulated growth of the so called "commercial surrogacy.

Prof Yogesh Chawla, director PGIMER emphasized the need of check and balances, especially with economic growth, booming medical tourism due to excellent medical expertise and state of the art medical facilities.  Surrogacy which may be the only hope for some childless couple should not be allowed to become a commercial commodity, there is need to stop mushrooming of the so called baby farming or baby factories.

Advocate Gehna Vaishnavi dwelled on the reasons behind writing this book. As the book has been written by both a lawyer and a doctor it has tried to address both human and legal aspects of surrogacy. Surrogacy is a sort of contract where in surrogate mother for a fee conceives a child through artificial insemination with the sperm of natural father. She is supposed to have no parental rights after the birth of the child. In addition to legal issues it involves the emotions of a woman and the plight of the childless couple. The book includes foreign judgements and Indian judicial precedents which have set bench mark as to how to deal with this issue.

BMW Celebrates 40 years of BMW Art Cars. “Rolling sculptures”

By 121 News

Chandigarh 26th May:- Ever since the invention of the motor car, artists have drawn inspiration from the thrill of speed, from the phenomenon of mobility and from racing cars as examples of modern sculpture. Since 1975, BMW Art Cars have been a central feature of this story. The idea behind the BMW Art Cars was the brainchild of French racing driver and art enthusiast Hervé Poulain: 40 years ago, Poulain asked artist friend Alexander Calder to apply his creative talents to his race car. Together with Jochen Neerpasch, then BMW Motorsport Director, the first BMW Art Car was born – and it became an instant crowd's favourite on the race track. Since then, new additions to the BMW Art Car Collection have been made over the years at irregular intervals, with unique works of art from artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney and Jeff Koons.

Maximilian Schöberl, Senior Vice President, Corporate and Governmental Affairs, BMW Group said that the BMW Art Cars provide an exciting landmark at the interface where cars, technology, design, art and motor sport meet. He added that the 40-year history of our 'rolling sculptures' is as unique as the artists who created them. The BMW Art Cars are an essential element and core characteristic of our global cultural engagement.

Maximilian Schöberl, further said that the anniversary celebrations got under way with exhibitions in Hong Kong, at the Centre Pompidou, the BMW Museum and the Concorso d'Eleganza at Lake Como, where the first four BMW Art Cars by Alexander Calder, Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, plus the M3 GT2 created by Jeff Koons, were all on display. Further presentations are set to follow later in 2015 in New York, Miami and Shanghai. The BMW Group would also like to introduce the 40th anniversary of the BMW Art Car Collection into the public sphere through social media. While exploring the vision of each artist for their car on its social media channels, the company also wants to ask people what the 'art of the car' means to them. To track the content, it will be shared under the hashtag #BMWArtCar.
