Chandigarh, July 20, 2025:-The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Chandigarh condemned the UT administration for demolishing the decades-old furniture market in Sectors 53–54, terming the move "heartless" and "ill-conceived." AAP alleged that "first slum clusters were cleared without rehabilitation, and now small furniture traders have been targeted."
The action, carried out earlier today, has, according to the party, deprived over 100 shopkeepers and their families of their livelihood.
Vijaypal Singh, President AAP Chandigarh, said that the sudden demolition has shattered traders who contributed for decades through taxes and service. The government must declare immediate compensation and a structured rehabilitation plan.
Sunny Aulkakh, General Secretary, stated that this market underpinned Chandigarh's trade ecosystem for nearly 40 years. Overnight demolition without an alternate site is unacceptable. All affected traders should be allotted space in the proposed Sector 56 bulk market and compensated for losses.
Vikrant A Tanwar, General Secretary (Trade) & State Media In-Charge, added that we will pursue every forum till justice is delivered. A joint committee with trader representation must oversee transparent compensation and fair relocation.
AAP reiterated that development cannot be measured by how many livelihoods are uprooted, calling small traders the backbone of the city's economy.
