DAV College Chandigarh has a long and proud tradition in sports, where students match their level of excellence with their high academic standards. To honour its sports alma mater, DAV College on Saturday organised an alumni meet of its sports heroes wherein more than 70 international sportspersons shared their college experience with the students.
The recent Dronacharya awardees—Sarkar Talwar, former Indian cricketer, and Shiv Singh, a boxer and former Indian women's boxing chief coach, graced the occasion as chief guests. Besides motivating the students to excel in sports, the chief guest Shiv Singh will also felicitate the college sports stars of the session 2021-22.
Singh will also distribute cash prizes, worth rupees 18 lakhs, to college students who excelled during the session.
Speaking on the occasion, DAV College Chandigarh principal Pawan Sharma said that the college has had the privilege of being the alma mater to a large number of distinguished men and women who have made their marks in different walks of life. The sports heroes of the college have participated in various national and international events and have won laurels for the college, making every teacher and student proud. In the recently conducted 'Panjab University Inter College Championships 2021-22', the students of DAV College gave a podium finish in the maximum number of competitions by winning the marches.
In the men section, the college has won 11 Championships, 5 Runners' up positions and 3 third positions in different individual and team sports whereas in the women competitions, the college won 7 Championships, 4 Runners' up positions and 2 third positions in various sports disciplines, principal Pawan Sharma said, adding that more than 50 college students have won medals at All India Inter University and national championships.
Naming a few, college alumni Yashawini Singh Deswal represented India at the "Tokyo Olympic Games-2020" in Tokyoand and competed in the 10 meters Air Pistol event in Shooting.
Vijayveer Sidhu has been selected to represent India in Asian Games to be held in Hongzou, China, 2022.
Vijayveer Sidhu,Udayveer Sidhu, Adarsh Singh, Pankaj Mukheja, Sarabjot Singh, Surya Pratap Singh Banshtu and Zeena Khitta, represent India in ISSF Junior World Cup, Suhl Germany, 2022 and won many medals. KM Divyanka Chaudhary represented India in the SAAF Marathon held at Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2022.
Hardeep Singh and Amandeep Dhaliwal represented India in the World Junior Athletics Championship, held at Nairobi, Kenya in August 2021.
While speaking on the occasion, Dronacharya awardee Shiv Singh said that sports play a pivotal role for the development of the students. The youth now have the best sports platforms in India, Khelo India Youth Games, where they can start their sports journey and achieve excellence. The college provides best sports facilities to the students and students must participate in the events, show their talents and win laurels for the college.
