Chandigarh Sept. 25, 2021:-The cardio-vascular (CVD) related deaths are the leading cause of death in India, with 52% of the cases being recorded in the people below the age of 70", said Dr Aditya Vikram Ruia, Interventional cardiologist, Grecian Superspeciality Hospital, on the occasion of World Heart Day.

The medical experts believe that the simple ECG and 2D Echo medical tests, which checks the electrical activity of the heart and pumping of the heart, respectively, are not enough to prevent people from suffering cardio-vascular ailments. Experts added that co-morbidities like hypertension and diabetes also lead to cardiac ailments.

The prevalence of Hypertension in Indian adult males is as high as 30% while the country is known as the 'Diabetic capital of the world' with prevalence of 17% in the urban population.

When the patients do some stressful work, like climbing stairs or exercising on a treadmill, the blood requirement of the heart goes up. This is when the patient might feel pain in his or her chest. While most people think that chest pain is the only symptom related to cardiac illness, it must be stressed that Diabetic patient may even have a silent heart attack, said Dr Aditya Ruia, adding that it is prudent that people adopt a healthy lifestyle with ample walking, quitting smoking, eating fresh vegetables and fruits, eating less oily and fried food.

Meanwhile, Dr Vinay Upadhyaya, Cardiovascular Surgeon, Grecian Superspeciality Hospital, said that traditionally, most of the surgical procedures on the heart are performed by a median sternotomy but the latest minimally invasive cardiac surgeries (MICS) provide access to the operating field, without the need for a sternotomy. As it provides better medical results, these surgeries require a skilled cardiac surgeon and well- equipped cardiac centers.

Now, minimally invasive procedures are also performed for valve repair or replacement and closure of septal defects.

While explaining the MICS, Dr Upadhyaya further said that the surgery causes minimal bleeding and ensures better lung functioning. Moreover, it is cheaper than the traditional open heart surgery and patients require a shorter hospital stay.
