By 121 News

Chandigarh August 27, 2021:- The Urology Team at Fortis Hospital Mohali performed a life-saving surgery on a 61-year-old patient, who was suffering from prostate cancer, using the revolutionary 4th generation robotic machine –Da Vinci–last month.  A team of doctors led by Dr Manish Ahuja, Consultant, Urology, Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgery, Fortis Mohali, performed the Robotic-assisted Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy.

Talking to media persons Dr Manish Ahuja said that the 61-year-old patient, Rajesh Kumar Kuchhal, complained of frequent urination and intense pain in the pelvic area. On diagnosis using a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and subsequent MRI of the pelvis revealed that he had prostate cancer (Stage 1). Further, the PET-CT scan revealed more complications. He added that to remove the tumour, Dr Ahuja and his team performed radical prostatectomy through robot-assisted arms on the patient, Rajesh Kumar Kuchhal, on July 28. The diseased gland was removed and the urinary bladder was stitched back to the urinary passage. Following good rehabilitation at Fortis Hospital Mohali, the patient had a smooth recovery and was discharged five days after the surgery.

Dr Manish Ahuja, Consultant, Urology, Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgery, Fortis Mohali, said that the prostate is the male reproductive gland which can enlarge due to hormonal changes after the age of 50. At times these enlargements can be cancerous in nature. However, if detected in time, the gland can be removed and the cure for cancer is achieved.

He added that several complicated and delicate surgeries are done with greater precision using robot-assisted technology. It is the latest form of minimal invasive surgery and provides a 3D view of the operative field via a special camera inserted into the body of the patient. Parts of the body which are difficult to reach with the human hand can be accessed through robot-assisted arms that can rotate 360 degrees. Patients have minimal blood loss, less scarring and the recovery process is faster.

Meanwhile, all praise for the high-quality treatment at Fortis Hospital Mohali, the patient, Rajesh Kumar Kuchhal, said that he was in great discomfort due to his health condition. He met Dr Manish Ahuja at Fortis Hospital Mohali and he gave him a detailed explanation on Robotic Surgery and its benefits. He was operated on July 28 and discharged five days after the medical procedure. He did not face any complications after the surgery and can do his daily activities with ease. He recommends Robotic Surgery for anybody facing prostate-related problems.
