Chandigarh 08th September:- Police resorted to lathicharge and used water cannons on members of Punjab Youth Congress (PYC) today when they were protesting against the misutilization of funds meant for scholarship of scheduled and backward students by the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) government in Punjab. Many of them including the president of PYC Amarpreet Singh Lally were detained by the Police while they were marching towards Assembly from Congress Youth Bhawan, Sector 15 in Chandigarh.
Amarpreet Singh Lally said that wrong policies were being pursued by the ruling SAD-BJP combine government. He said that the central government stopped the release Rs 500 crore under the SC Scholarship scheme in 2015-16 to Punjab because state government failed to produce the utilization certificate. Sukhbir Badal had ordered a vigilance inquiry into the scam which is yet to start which clearly shows callous attitude of state government towards Dalit students. He added that it appears that funds are being used on Sangat Darshan and other government related activities. The due benefit is not reaching to the real beneficiaries. The state government has also failed provide us satisfactory answers on this issue under the Right to Information Act (RTI).
While condemning the undemocratic act of Police, Amarpreet Singh Lally said that many of our workers have broken bones and Police can keep arresting us but we will continue our fight for the rights of these students. We want justice for scheduled caste and backward students of Punjab who have been deprived of their rights.
