Special Attention To Be Paid Towards Primary Schools to Develop Sports Culture

Chandigarh 10th December:- The Education Minister, Punjab, Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema today announced that special attention would be paid to the primary schools in order to attract youngsters towards the sports and inculcate sports culture in them from childhood. Disclosing this during the inauguration of one of its kind 'Maidan Summit' here at Panjab University, Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema informed that the Education Department has made a period each day mandatory for sports in the government schools of the state.

Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema said that developing sports culture is of paramount importance when it comes to encourage young blood to keep away from drugs and channelize their energy in the positive direction. He said that to encourage young children to take up sports, each primary school in the state would get sports kit as per the demand as well as number of students.

The Minister elaborated that the state government is devoting special attention to develop sports infrastructure in the state and the construction of 14 stadiums, including 6 Hockey Astroturf stadiums, with every facility available in the modern era stands strong testimony to it. He said that under the sports policy, the Punjab Government has disbursed cash prizes worth Rs. 15.18 crores to the players excelling at both National and International level besides providing government jobs to them. Apart from this, a state of the art 'Punjab Institute of Sports' has been established with specialized focus on 10 major sports. He also informed that the state government made whole hearted efforts to popularize Kabbadi with enormous success and also revived State Games.

The Education Minister while congratulating the organizers of the summit, Panjab University, Young Football Club Rurka Kalan, Magic Bus India Foundation and Khelshala, joked in a lighter vain that although he has participated in the summits related to Education, Agriculture and Investments but this is his first chance of attending a sports summit. Making the mood lighter, he said that the summit should have been held in open sports ground in place of an auditorium.   

On this occasion,Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University Chandigarh Prof. Arun Kumar Grover, CEO Magic Bus India foundation  Prateek Kumar, Honorary Director Central Placement Cell of the university  Suresh Kumar Chaddha, President Young Football Club Rurka Kalan Gurmangal Das and Founder of  Khelshala Satinder Bajwa also addressed the gathering.
