Chandigarh 22nd September:- On the historic occasion of completion of 50 years of Indo-Pak War 1965, Zila Sainik Board, Chandigarh honored Smt. Jaswant Jeet Kaur, wife of Lt Ajit Singh laid down his life during the war. The honour was bestowed by Dr. SB Deepak Kumar, DC-cum-President, Zila Sainik Board Chandigarh. He was accompanied by Danish Ashraf, IAS, SDM (East), Lt Col RK Singh, Zila Sainik Welfare Officer, Chandigarh. Smt. Jaswant Jeet Kaur was presented with a shawl, a citation and cheque of Rs 15,000/-. Lt Col B.S. Dhillon and Major D.S. Sandhu, nominated Councilor, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh were also present during the occasion
Lt Ajit Singh was born on 04.01.1938, Lt Ajit Singh joined the Indian Army in 1964 and was commissioned in the 4th Battalion of Sikh Regiment. The battalion is famous for its valour in the epic 'Battle of Saragarhi' fought in North Western Frontier Province (NWFP) on 12 Sep 1897.
During the Indo-Pak War, Lt Ajit Singh took part in the 'Battle of Burki' on 10 Sep 1965, wherein his battalion 4 SIKH succeeded in capture of Burki after a fierce battle. Merely two day later, on 12 Sep 1965 the battalion took part in battle of Khem Karan, where Lt. Ajit Singh gave the supreme sacrifice while defending the honour and territorial integrity of the Nation. He was survived by his wife Mrs. Jaswant Jeet Kaur and 2 year old son Satpreet Singh.
Smt. Jaswant Jeet Kaur, said that after the death of Lt Ajit Singh in the 1965 war, she was totally desperate. She faced lots of trouble in her life. She didn't get any support from her in laws. She made her carrier at her own. As a young widow she managed her life creditably well and retired as Senior Audit Officer from Accountant General Office, Punjab. In keeping with the fine traditions of the Armed Forces their only son Satpreet Singh joined the Indian Army and was commissioned in his father's famous battalion i.e. 4 SIKH. He is currently serving as Colonel and posted at Bhatinda.
