CII – NITTTR – SARTHAK’s ABILITY'14 Provides Job Opportunities To 57 Disabled Candidates

Chandigarh 20th May:-- 57 candidates were shortlisted on the spot out of more than 200 differently abled (disabled) persons by 21 companies which participated in ABILITY 2014 "Embracing Ability: Making It Happen", a job fair for Persons with disabilities (PWDs), organised jointly by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Nortehrn Region, National Institute for Technical Teachers' Training and Research (NITTR), Sarthak Educational Trust and VRC (Ludhiana) held at NITTTR, Sector 26, here today.

It was specifically organised to bring the disabled (differently abled) persons in to the mainstream by opening new doors of employment for them as also to help them earn a livelihood.More than 200 differently abled candidates participated in the drive, out of which 65 % were orthopaedically handicapped including polio inflicted, 10 % were hearing impaired and 25 % were visually challenged. The participating candidates appreciated the industry's response and felt encouraged, as they got an opportunity to meet and interact with the corporates as part of this recruitment drive. The positions for which they were interviewed included – Mechanical Engineers, Customer Care Executive, Fitters, Electricians, Refrigerator Mechanics, Front / Back end desk executives, Administratve jobs, Data Entry operators,  Office Assistants, Production Supervisiors, Telephone operators Packers, Assembly Operators, Lab Technincian, Telecallers, Retail Marketing jobs, etc.

The 21 CII member companies which participated in this special placement drive included companies like Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, Future Group (Big Bazar), Tech Mahindra, Concentric (IBM), Taj Hotels Ltd, Videocon Telecom, Loreal India, Café Coffee Day (Amalgamated Bean Coffee Trading Company Limited -ABCTCL), Jubilant FoodWorks Limited (Domino's Pizza), Competent Synergies Pvt Ltd, Gilard Electronics Pvt Ltd, Desh Bhagat University, Kapsons Agencies Pvt Ltd, IL&FS Skills Development Corporation, Sachdeva College of Pharmacy, , Genpact Limited, Serco Global Service, ISON BPO, etc.

Darpan Kapoor, Chairman, CII Chandigarh Council & Vice Chairman Kapsons Group, shared that it is estimated that 75% of the persons with disabilities live in rural areas. Only 49% of them are literate and only 34% are employed. The country is experiencing transition from medical rehabilitation to social rehabilitation. He further added that CII is aggressively motivating industry as part of its social commitment to recruit recruiting Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and also provide the right channel.

Dr M P Poonia, Director, NITTTR, shared that skill development and training are the tools to shape the future of 'specially- abled' aspirants. In last 4 years, ABILITY job fairs have been successful in providing jobs to 250 disabled and is sonstantly mobilising more and more companies in this direction. The purpose of ABILITY is to connect the PWDs to main stream.

Pikender Pal Singh, Regional Director, CII NR shared that "It has always been CII's endeavour to work towards and achieve inclusive growth of the country including all sections of the society. CII spreads awareness among disabled candidates about the job market and regularly sensitises the industry to treat the Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) with equality and dignity and provide them with employment opportunities and improve their access to services and facilities. During past three years, we have had more than nine rounds of job fairs and identified approximately 130 PWDs for placement in a number of organizations.

  Dr Jitender Aggarwal, CEO, Sarthak Educational Trust shared that industry and Government should join hands and chalk out a strong Action plan to enable a successful career path to differently abled people. Local employers should also understand their responsibility in generating job opportunities for PWDs.

Dr B D Mundhra, Chairman and Managing Director, Simplex Infrastructures Ltd shared that in the present scenario, industry needs skill-smart work force. So, the PWDs need to groom themselves with best practical knowledge and skill training. Also, the industry should come forward in providing right opportunity to talented aspirants.
