NATIONAL WORKSHOP ON CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY:Clinical Trials Discussed

Chandigarh 25th March:-- The 2nd day of the ongoing National Workshop on Clinical Pharmacology, in the department of Pharmacology, PGI, Chandigarh, began with an interactive session on confirmatory trials by Dr Rajan Mittal, Associate Director, Global Medical Affairs Dr. Reddy’s Lab. He took a presentation on biologics which are an important emerging field world over.

He enlightened the audience about his experiences in clinical trials of biologics conducted by Dr Reddy’s Lab besides updating about the issues with regulations of biologics, especially in India. Dr Sandeep Kaushal, Assistant Dean Academics and Head Pharmacology department, Dayanand Medical College, Ludhiana discussed the topic of clinical pharmacokinetics. Prof SC Chopra, Professor and Head Pharmacology, Adesh Institute of Medical Sciences, Bathinda trained the participants on using Excel for undertaking calculations of pharmacokinetics in a very simple manner. Dr Lekha Saha, Assistant Professor in the department of Pharmacology deliberated upon Pharmacoeconomics, an area increasingly being considered important.  Dr Ankur Gupta, Associate Director for antimicrobial stewardship in emerging markets at Merck Pharmaceuticals, gave interesting and informative talk on PK/PD of antimicrobials and stressed the need for initiating antimicrobial stewardship programs in hospital settings. He elaborated on utility of these programs in rationalizing the antibiotic therapies and curbing the menace of drug resistance. The day was wound up with hands on demonstrations of evaluation of Pharmacodynamics of cardiovascular and central nervous systems and pharmacokinetics by the residents and faculty members of the institute
