Chandigarh 11th October:--- World Mental Health Week was celebrated by the National Institute of Nursing Education, PGI, Chandigarh under the guidance of Dr. Sandhya Ghai, Principal, NINE & Dr. Sunita Sharma,Lecturer, NINE in collaboration with the NSS unit of the Institute.
The Mental Health Day was celebrated for three consecutive days at different settings. The inauguration of the function was held at Samarth, A Residential Centre for children with intellectual disability, which was coordinated by Ms.Nitasha Sharma, Clinical Instructor, NINE.. The chief guest for the event Dr. B.S. Chavan, Head of the Department of Psychiatry, G.M.C.H. Chandigarh appreciated the efforts of Principal & students of NINE. The inmates of Samarth performed plays, dances and other cultural items which were appreciated by all. The second day of the celebration was held at Old Age Home, Sector 15, Chandigarh. The Chief Guest for the day was Dr. Kusum Joshi, Ex- Sub Dean PGIMER. She highlighted the importance of healthy life style, balanced diet and drug compliance in maintaining the quality of life in old age. Dr. Ghai also laid emphasis on deriving satisfaction from good memories of past. The laughter Therapy session was also conducted by Dr. Sunita Sharma in which all the residents participated with great enthusiasm. The Antakshri & role play were also organized to add to their happiness. The relaxation therapies were organized for the Faculty, students and ministerial staff of NINE by Dr. Karobi Das & Dr. A.K.Rana.
The gathering of Senior citizens of village Sarangpur marked the celebrations of the third day. Dr. S. Ghai emphasized on role of positive attitude and optimism in maintaining mental health. The students of NINE performed the role play which highlighted importance of giving respect to elders under the guidance of Ms. Rajbeer Kaur, Clinical Instructor, NINE. These celebrations were one step towards combating the loneliness & depression in elderly. And harnessing the potential of enjoying a full and active later life, and maintaining a healthy social involvement in the community.
