Health Department, Observe Breast Feeding Week

Chandigarh 07^th August:--  Health Department, U.T., Chandigarh, was observed the Breast Feeding Week  from 1st August to 7thAugust 2013. The programme highlighted the advantages of Breast Feeding in creating a bond between the mother and the new born and how it would go a long way in decreasing the child mortality.This important issue which needs an immediate addresal with the mothers of the new borns was to give exclusive breast feeding for six months, importance of first milk i.e. colostrum.  The awareness was generated by way of displaying banners and posters in all the health facilities of UT, Chandigarh .The banners displayed in all the major Health Institutions of U.T.,Chandigarh carried the messages regarding the advantages of Breast Feeding not only to the child but also to the mother. Besides the routine awareness generation done by the ANMs during the ANC period as well as at the time of delivery,one to one talks were also held with father, mother and grandparents as they are the decision maker of the family by the Health Officials in their respective working places during this week. Special talk on importance of exclusive breast feeding was given to the students of GCG -42 and a function was organized in Civil Dispensary 38 by Chandigarh Administration in collaboration with School of Public Health, PGIMER. A movie was shown on importance of breast feeding for generating awareness among the masses which constituted of peer educators and School teachers and elderly people also as they are the decision makers of the family.
