Congress Exposes Historic Failures of BJP Mayor’s One-Year Tenure with Facts

By 121 News
Chandigarh, Jan.24, 2026:-The President of the Chandigarh Pradesh Congress Committee, H.S. Lucky, Senior Deputy Mayor Jasbir Singh Bunty, Deputy Mayor Taruna Mehta, and Councillors Gurpreet Gabi, Sachin Galav, Darshna Rani, and Nirmala Devi today held a joint press conference to strongly rebut the press conference addressed yesterday by BJP leaders and the Mayor. Congress leaders categorically rejected the so-called "achievements" listed by the BJP Mayor, stating that the past one year has been marked by failures, mismanagement, and anti-people decisions.
The Congress made it clear that the tenure of the current Municipal Corporation Mayor has become a symbol of administrative chaos, insensitivity, and lack of direction in the history of Chandigarh. This is not an allegation, but the bitter truth of the past one year.
πŸ„ Gaushala Incident: Height of Insensitivity
Under the tenure of a BJP Mayor who indulges in politics in the name of cows, on just the second day in office, 8 cows and one bull died a painful death due to electrocution at the Maloya Gaushala. Although an inquiry was announced, till date neither has any impartial investigation been conducted nor has any action been taken against those responsible. Subsequently, the death of more than 50 cows, bulls, and calves at the Raipur Kalan Gaushala completely exposed the administration's insensitivity.
πŸ’° Financial Mismanagement: Pushing the Corporation Towards Bankruptcy
The Municipal Corporation was forced to withdraw money from the pension fund to pay salaries to its employees, which in itself is the biggest proof of financial mismanagement. Throughout the year, adequate funds were not received from the Central Government and the Administration, forcing employees and the general public to take to the streets. Whatever limited funds were received proved to be "a drop in the ocean.
🚰 Water Supply System Completely Failed
The claim of 24-hour water supply in Manimajra turned out to be a complete failure. This caused immense inconvenience to residents and also resulted in heavy losses to the Corporation's revenue. Even today, residents of Manimajra are forced to make repeated rounds of Municipal Corporation offices for water connections and NOCs.
πŸ‘¨‍πŸš’ Direct Attack on Employment
Fire brigade personnel, tubewell operators, COVID field staff, and SCADA staff—who served the city during times of crisis—were shown the door instead of being honoured. This decision reflects an inhuman and insensitive administration.
🏠 Economic Burden on the Public
During the Mayor's tenure, an attempt was made to increase property tax threefold. After strong public opposition, it was reluctantly doubled, leading to widespread anger among city residents.
πŸ›£️ Blow to the Autonomy of the Municipal Corporation
Major city roads were handed over to the Chandigarh Administration, weakening the Municipal Corporation. One after another, major projects failed. The attempt and conspiracy to sell valuable land in Pocket No. 6 at throwaway prices is another dark truth of this tenure.
πŸ—‘️ Collapse of Sanitation System
Garbage from the Dadu Majra dumping ground was sent to other districts without processing. The system of dry and wet waste segregation has completely collapsed, harming the city's cleanliness ranking and image.
πŸš‡ False Development Promises
The Metro project still exists only on paper. Questions raised in Parliament and the replies received have exposed the hollowness of BJP's claims.
πŸ›️ Disregard for Democratic Norms
Important meetings were dominated by the Mayor's unilateral approach. The Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor were consistently ignored. The Mayor also failed miserably to carry along even councillors from his own party.
Public Verdict
Today, the people of Chandigarh are saying in one voice:
"There are not potholes on the roads; rather, there are roads inside potholes."
The damage done to Chandigarh's image in this one year is unprecedented in the last 30 years.
BJP's Allegations Against MP Manish Tewari Are Misleading
The Congress outright rejected the misinformation being spread by the BJP regarding the contribution of MP Manish Tewari. The Congress stated that Manish Tewari has not only raised every issue concerning Chandigarh seriously in Parliament but has also strongly advocated before Union Ministers and various committees to secure ₹1700 crore for strengthening the Municipal Corporation, on the lines of the Delhi Finance Commission.
He supported the system of a five-year tenure for a directly elected Mayor and has consistently raised the issue of the garbage mountain at Dadu Majra. This clearly shows that the MP is discharging his responsibilities with complete sincerity and commitment. He does not need certificates from the BJP, but the trust of the people.
The Congress said that the public is watching everything, and in the Municipal Corporation elections scheduled for December 2026, the BJP will have to give a full account of its failures.
