Chandigarh, May 27, 2024:- The INDIA bloc candidate from Chandigarh parliamentary constituency Manish Tewari today shredded into pieces the claims of the Bharatiya Janata Party made in its manifesto, remarking, "it is a classic case of old wine in new bottles", as the manifesto is the repackaging of old unfulfilled promises only.
He observed, since the BJP was in power for ten years, the BJP along with the manifesto, should have brought out the balance sheet of ten years, which obviously it could not as it has nothing to show.
Interacting with reporters during his padyatra in Butrela area, Tewari while replying to a question on BJP's manifesto released yesterday, pointed out, much before he could comment it has already been rejected by people of Chandigarh who have raised the questions on unkept promises repeated again in the current manifesto.
He said the BJP had promised 'Mono Rail' in Chandigarh in its 2019 manifesto . Neither there was Mono Rail, nor was there any progress on the Metro project, Tewari pointed out, while adding, with the result the city's roads remained clogged due to heavy traffic.
He said the BJP had promised to regularize the need based changes made in the Housing Board allotted units. On the contrary, he said, the Housing Board issued draconian notices for even small changes made, sometimes fines of lakhs of rupees were imposed, bulldozers were brought to raze the houses and sometimes poor people were even evicted from their homes.
The INDIA bloc candidate referred to BJP's promise of giving ownership rights on the basis of general power of attorney. As usual this promise also remained on papers only, he said.
Referring to the BJP's promise of providing 24-hour water supply in Chandigarh, he said, the same promise was made in 2019. Not only was the promise not fulfilled, the tariff was exorbitantly increased.
Tewari said, like the BJP promised to remove the Dadumajra garbage dump in the current manifesto, it has promised it in 2019 also. If they could not do anything in five years, what can be expected of them to do in another five years, which they are not getting in any way.
Similarly he referred to the issue of parking in the city, improving the public transport system, and permission to build additional floors on booths in the city. But the truth is that the then BJP President Tandon and MP Kiran Kher simply forgot their promises made to the booths and other commercial buildings.
The BJP, he said, had promised to extend the boundary of Lal Dora in villages, regularize the houses built outside the Lal Dora, abolish the Periphery Act and the people will not have to face harassment. This promise, he said, also remains unfulfilled.
