Chandigarh June 23, 2021:-Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women observed World Rainforest Day by organising various online activities. The Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat Club and NSS units of the college, in collaboration with the Department of Forest and Wildlife, UT Chandigarh, organised a national level Online Poem Writing Competition to commemorate the day. The topic for the competition was 'Reclaiming Spaces: Nature in Times of Pandemic'. Over 230 entries in both Hindi and English from nearly 23 Indian states and many countries including Argentina, Malaysia, Nigeria and Nepal were received. The participants shared their creative poetic creations on the theme, reflecting their sensitivity towards mother nature and its conservation.
In another event, the Fine Arts Department of the college organised an online Painting Exhibition titled 'The Healing Power of Nature: Art in the Times of Pandemic'. Amidst global concerns about the need for maintaining ecological balance, the budding artists of the department showcased their talent and creativity in an aesthetically appealing way to spread the message of need to conserve nature.
Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava expressed appreciation for the initiatives aiming to raise awareness about the cause of preservation of the integral natural resource i.e. rainforests. She added that deforestation has brought about climatic imbalances and ecological imbalances that have lead to further problems and thus it is imperative to preserve rainforests.
