Chandigarh Sept. 30, 2020:- A rare complex knee replacement was done at Advanced Orthopaedic Insitute (AOI), Aykai Hospital, Ludhiana by Dr Harpreet S. Gill, Director AOI and Joint replacement.
According to Dr Gill, the patient presented with inability to bear weight on the legs for about two months. She had a rare windswept deformity of the knees, which is seen in only 1.5% of adult population in the world. Performing a knee replacement in such deformed knees is a big challenge. In this, one knee is bent inward and other is bent outward and patient was confined to wheelchair. Whenever she attempted to put weight, her one knee joint would go outward the opposite knee would bend inwards. Because of this deformity and resulting pain, she was unable to walk and was feeling depressed in these corona times.
Dr Gill said in such rare deformities of knee, the knee implant used is the types used for the revision knee replacement surgery (in those cases where knee replacement had failed or giving problems) and both knees need to be replaced. It is all the more challenging to perform such a surgery in Corona times, where safety of the patient and the supporting staff is of paramount importance.
Dr Sunil Katyal, HOD Anaesthesia said that because of these knee deformities, even the spine of the patient is bent and it is difficult to give anaesthesia. Other team members included Dr Manmohan Singh, Sr Consultant Orthopaedics and rehab done by Dr Rohit Singla, Chief Physiotherapist.
Commenting further, Dr Gill said that the team at AOI,Aykai was feeling satisfied as they had helped a wheelchair bound depressed patient to walk again in these Corona times.
