PGI Celebrates World No Tobacco Day

Chandigarh 31st May:- PGI, Chandigarh, continuing its efforts in contributing towards a Tobacco-Free healthy society, organized a Public lecture on World No Tobacco Day, i.e. May 31, 2016.

It was organized by the Department of Hospital Administration, PGI in lecture theatre of the Nehru hospital and got an enthusiastic response from general public, faculty members, residents, nursing staff and employees of the Institute. A renowned Chandigarh based anti-tobacco social activist, Hemant Goswami enlightened the audience with different premises driving the consumption of tobacco in the society. He cited the examples from a couple of research studies based on the consumption pattern, economics and consequences associated with tobacco use. Hemant Goswami advocated complete ban on tobacco production as the appropriate strategy for curbing tobacco use.

Prof. D. Behera, Head of the Department, Pulmonary Medicine apprised the audience with numerous diseases and cancers involved with the consumption of tobacco. He encouraged the audience to quit tobacco as he brought forth the fact that quitting tobacco at any age will be beneficial than consuming it.

Prof. A.K. Gupta, Medical Superintendent cum Head, Department of Hospital Administration informed the audience about the steps taken by PGI, Chandigarh in making the Institute tobacco free. He further added that PGI has been actively pursuing this "No tobacco campaign" since 2014 and successfully been able to discourage the entry of tobacco containing material in the hospital premises. He informed that so far the Institute has been able to destroy more than 900kgs of tobacco containing material. He urged the audience to be the force multipliers in this campaign.

The Director, PGI, Prof. Y.K. Chawla, applauded the dedicated efforts of the Department of Hospital Administration towards creating a TOBACCO- FREE PGI. He also suggested that more such wide reaching campaigns be organized to curb the evils of tobacco consumption.

There was an amazing display of posters painted by the students of various schools of Chandigarh. The students who got first, second and third prizes respectively were felicitated by the anti-tobacco social activist, Hemant Goswami, Director, PGI, Prof. Y.K. Chawla, Medical Superintendent, Prof. A. K. Gupta and Head of the Department, Pulmonary Medicine, Prof. D. Behera. The talk concluded with reinforcement to the message of impact of Anti- Tobacco practices in PGI and in the society at large.
