PGI Holds Workshop on “Biomedical Instrumentations- Innovative ideas and collaboration opportunities”

Chandigarh 18th January:- PGI, Chandigarh held a one day workshop on Monday, 18th January, 2016 on "Biomedical Instrumentations- Innovative ideas and collaboration opportunities". Prof YK Chawla, Director PGI, has been encouraging PGI faculty and resident doctors to come up with innovative ideas for affordable healthcare instruments and devices. In this connection, Prof Chawla formed a core team to take this initiative forward. The team headed by Prof GD Puri, Chief of Advanced Cardiac Centre at PGI organised this workshop with the aim to share ideas and expertise to develop innovative solutions for developing low cost instruments.

This was a first of its kind workshop wherein all the regional institutions participated on a common platform to brainstorm ideas for innovation. This workshop was attended by eminent medical specialists from PGI, Chandigarh as well as engineering and technology experts from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Ropar, IIT-Mandi, Central Scientific Instrumentation Organisation (CSIO), Chandigarh, Punjab Engineering College (PEC), Chandigarh, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER)- Mohali, Semiconductors Limited (SCL), Mohali and INST, Mohali. The engineering and technology experts put forth their ideas in biomedical innovation that might be useful for patient care and the PGI faculty and scholars discussed the various ideas and solutions useful for patient care management that require engineering and industry partnership. The brainstorming session that lasted the whole was highly intense where the delegates found the platform for exchange of ideas very useful.

In addition, for the first time representatives of industry and commerce dealing with manufacturing and supply of biomedical instruments and devices also participated in this workshop. Prof Subhash Verma, Sub-Dean, PGI re-iterated the need for similar workshops regularly to facilitate developing indigenous solutions and equipments that are cost-effective for high quality healthcare delivery in our setup and region.
