PGI Holds Antibiotic Meet on Antibiotic Awareness Day

Chandigarh 18th November:- Taking cognizance of the antibiotics being rendered ineffective due to the irrational use throughout the world, on European Antibiotic Awareness Day, an 'Antibiotic meet' was held at PGI, which was duly inaugurated by the Director. Under the moderation of Prof Navneet Sharma, department of Internal Medicine, the two speakers from Microbiology department dwelled on this issue. Prof Pallab Ray talked about 'Man, microbes and resistance: an introduction' and Dr Vikas Gautam discussed about a class of antibiotic, which are now used as a last resort 'Polymyxins Reappraisal'. Prof Pallab Ray deliberated upon how resistance has evolved and the havoc created by this that even simple infections are now becoming untreatable. Dr Vikas Gautam discussed about the gloomy scenario that we have now resort to old drugs as the pipeline for the new drugs is dry. The forum emphasized on the rational use of antibiotics, which shouldn't be prescribed when not needed or taken unnecessarily by the patient himself.
