Chandigarh Makes it to the List of 100 Smart Cities

Chandigarh 27th August:- Putting an end to the race among cities to land on the list of 100 smart cities, the Urban Development Ministry today announced the names of 98 cities being selected for the NDA government's flagship Smart City project. It is a moment of pride as the collective efforts of the Chandigarh Administration and citizens have paid off, with Chandigarh making it to the list of 100 smart cities. The selection was done through intra-city competition which evaluated the various cities on parameters such as service levels, financial and institutional capacity, past track record and reforms.

It has been a great achievement for the City Beautiful-Chandigarh as it comes a step closer to becoming a "Smart City" by passing the Stage-I of the "Smart City Mission". For the second stage of the competition, the administration has pulled up its sleeves and is all set to prepare a "Smart City Proposal" in consultation with the city residents and other stakeholders, for participation in the 'City Challenge'.  

The 100 smart cities mission intends to promote adoption of smart solutions for efficient use of available assets, resources and infrastructure. Centre has earmarked Rs 48,000 crore for development of 100 smart cities. In the first phase, Centre will pick 20 cities and in the next two years 40 cities each will be selected for receiving Central funding of Rs 500 crore spread over the next five years. Each smart city would get a Central assistance of Rs 100 crore per year for five years.

The list of 98 smart cities, including 24 state capitals released by the government includes Port Blair, Vishakhapatnam, Tirupati, Kakinada, Pasighat, Guwahati, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Biharsharif, Chandigarh, Raipur, Bilaspur, Diu, Silvassa, NDMC, Panaji, Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Dahod, Karnal, Faridabad, Dharamsala, Ranchi, Mangaluru, Belagavi, Shivamogga, Hubballi-Dharwad, Tumakuru, Davanegere, Kochi, Kavaratti, Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Gwalior, Sagar, Satna, Ujjain, Navi Mumbai, Nasik, Thane, Greater Mumbai, Amaravati, Solapur, Nagpur, Kalyan-Dombivalli, Aurangabad, Pune, Imphal, Shillong, Aizawl, Kohima, Bhubaneswar, Rourkela, Oulgaret, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Jaipur, Udaipur, Kota, Ajmer, Namchi, Tiruchirapalli, Tirunelveli, Dindigul, Thanjavur, Tiruppur, Salem, Vellore, Coimbatore, Madurai, Erode, Thoothukudi, Chennai, Greater Hyderabad, Greater Warangal, Agartala, Moradabad, Aligarh, Shaharanpur, Bareilly, Jhansi, Kanpur, Allahabad, Lucknow, Varanasi, Ghaziabad, Agra, Rampur, Dehradun, New Town Kolkata, Bidhannagar, Durgapur, Haldia. Two other cities will be announced later.
