Chandigarh 22nd March:- A 5-day training programme on Water, Sanitation, Hygiene (WaSH) & Health focussing on "Bacteriological Technique for Water and Waste-water Analysis and Quality Assurance" concluded at School of Public Health, PGI, Chandigarh. The training programme was organized by School of Public Health, PGIMER in collaboration with Department of Environment Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Dr. Ravindra Khaiwal, Assistant Professor of Environment Health, School of Public Health, PGI and Dr. Suman Mor, Assistant Professor, Department of Environment Studies, Panjab University coordinated the training programme, which is also linked to theme of World Water Day i.e. Water and Sustainable Development.
Prof. Rajesh Kumar, Head, School of Public Health, PGI chaired the valedictory session and praised the efforts of Dr. Ravindra Khaiwal, Assistant Professor of Environmental Health, School of Public Health, PGI and Dr. Suman Mor, Assistant Professor, Department of Environment Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh for conducting a course on "Water, Sanitation, Hygiene (WaSH) & Health". He further highlighted that such trainings are required to strengthen "Swachh Bharat Mission" as they provide required technical skills to the professionals, who can further extend their knowledge to protect and to ensure safe drinking water. Dr Ravindra Khaiwal stressed on the need of innovative, cost effective and rapid techniques, which can be utilized by common man to test the drinking water quality and specifically in rural locations. He mentioned that such rapid bacteriological testing kits will be very useful to test the water quality in slums of Chandigarh to prevent any outbreak of water borne diseases.
Dr. Suman Mor stressed that availability of safe water and sanitation will improve women and girl's education and will also improve their health and dignity. She further mentioned that the theme of 2015 "World Water Day" is "Water and Sustainable Development", hence with the growing need of development, we should also focus on protecting our water sources from pollution. While development is necessary, we should also focus on protecting our water sources from various type of pollution and utilize water resources more effectively and efficiently.
