Mohali 07th September:--- The Students of Shemrock Senior Secondary School, Mohali took out a rally from the school to 7 Phase for spread awareness among the people about ozone-depleting substances like chlorine and bromine.The students carried banners and placards which read "SAVE OZONE,SAVE EARTH" "OZONE NOW OXYGEN LATER" "PRESERVE OUR OZONE". Earlier in the school an inter class Poster Making Competition was held, in which students of class 8 actively participated. They made beautiful posters highlighting the need to save our atmosphere which is getting polluted day by day with increasing emissions in the air
While speaking on this occasion Principal S.K.Sharma said that the resources persons said following the global warming and pollution on the earth, the ozone layer has been getting thinner, which could be detrimental for the human beings. The existence of the earth could be at stake. He further said that Children were also told about the importance of ozone layer surrounding the earth that prevents harmful ultraviolet radiations of the sun from entering the atmosphere.
Chairman A.S.Bajwa said at this moment that out of the total energy received by the earth, 35 per cent is reflected back to the space by the clouds, dust-particles and ice particles present in the atmosphere. 14 per cent of the energy, which comes in the form of ultraviolet radiation, gets absorbed by the ozone layer, thus saving the earth from the harmful effects like over-warming of the earth or diseases like cancer. He said 34 per cent of the energy is radiated back from the earth in the form of direct solar radiation and 17 per cent radiated back from the earth in the form of terrestrial radiation. Chairman Bajwa further added that now it was our responsibility to save the ozone layer by decreasing the use of products that cause damage to this layer so that our next generation could enjoy a safe and healthy environment.
