Chandigarh, May 20, 2025:--The Chandigarh Pradesh Congress Committee strongly condemns the Chandigarh Administration and the Municipal Corporation's arbitrary decision to demolish 21 religious structures in the city tomorrow. Terming the move as insensitive and politically motivated, Congress leaders have demanded an immediate halt to the demolitions and called for a comprehensive policy to regularize these structures in a respectful and lawful manner.
H.S. Lucky, President of the Chandigarh Pradesh Congress, expressed deep concern over the silence of the BJP leadership on the issue. Lucky said that the BJP, which has repeatedly sought votes in the name of religion and portrayed itself as the custodian of religious sentiments, is now conveniently silent when religious sites are being razed under its own governance.
He further added that this double standard is not only shocking but also exposes the opportunistic face of the BJP. The sentiments of devotees and the sanctity of religious places must be respected. Demolishing temples, gurudwaras, or any place of worship without public consultation or an alternative plan is a direct assault on the spiritual and cultural fabric of Chandigarh.
The Congress Party has called upon the Chandigarh Administration to suspend the planned demolitions and engage in a constructive dialogue with all stakeholders, including religious organizations, local communities, and elected representatives. The party has demanded the formation of a balanced and inclusive policy to regularize religious structures that have been serving the community for decades.
He said that in a city like Chandigarh, which prides itself on harmony, diversity, and cultural unity, there is no place for such bulldozer politics. We urge the Administration to act with compassion and foresight rather than resort to high-handed actions that risk public unrest and religious disharmony.
The Congress stands with the people of Chandigarh and reiterates its commitment to preserving the secular and inclusive ethos of the city. The party will continue to oppose any unilateral actions that undermine the faith and sentiments of its citizens.
