Government College of Education, Sector 20D, Chandigarh with support of Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC) and Organic Sharing Foundation Chandigarh celebrated International E-Waste Day in the form of an eco-friendly event to raise awareness about E-waste management today. The guests for the occasion were Nautiyal, IFS Chief Conservator of Forest, Chandigarh; Ms. Rythm Aggarwal, Assistant Environment Engineer CPCC and Special Guest, Rahul Mahajan (Tree Man) Chandigarh and Ms. Iti, Renowned Landscapist and Specialized in Seed Farming.
The program started with a lamp lightening ceremony and college anthem. Principal Dr. Sapna Nanda extended a formal green welcome to the guests with saplings and shared the aim of Parijat Eco- Club of the college and informed about various projects being undertaken by the committee during the session. She added that by promoting e-waste management, the college aims to create a culture of sustainability and encourage future generations to take a proactive stance in preserving the environment.
Mr. Nautiyal in his address shared life examples and emphasized that E-waste management is very essential to avoid soil, water and air pollution that affects our health. He also discussed domestic waste in our houses such as plastics material, polythene and non-biodegradable substances to be managed and disposed of to authorized dealers. He motivated all to use cloth and jute bags as a habit and segregation of dry and wet waste at homes. Ms. Rythm Aggarwal gave a presentation on E-waste management as a global concern. She highlighted the concepts of E-waste composition, How it adds to environmental pollution, State of art recycling technologies like decontamination, segregation, dismantling, hammering, recycling and refining, E-waste management rules 2022 and its objectives, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), Duties of state pollution control boards as inventorisation, grant and monitoring, inspection and urban local bodies, producers, consumers and action against violations.
Exciting competitions of Poster making, Best out of waste, Art with CD or DVD's were organized during the event. Prize winners of the events were: Photography- First position-Ms. Komal, Second-Ms. Soniya Third-Ms. Mamta; Poster Making-Ms. Shivani Puri Second-Ms. Shagun Vinayak & Pallavi, Third- Himanshu & Ms. Vishakha; E-waste Models-Ms. Tanuja, Second-Ms. Prakriti & Taranjeet Kaur, Third- Ms. Kavya & Nisha. Cash Prizes were given to the winners. Two Special awards were presented to students Avinash ( Govt. Model Sr. Sec. School Sector 21 Chandigarh) and Raghav (Govt. Model Sr. Sec. School Sector 28 D Chandigarh) for taking pledge to save the environment and working relentlessly to take care of trees planted under Meri Maati Mera Desh, NSS activity of the college.
Dr. A.K Srivastava, Dean of the college extended a formal vote of thanks to the guest and all present. The layout of the program was prepared by Incharge of Parijat Eco Club Ravinder Kumar, supported by the Environment Wing of NSS unit of the college Incharge, Dr. Ravneet Chawla.
