Fortis Mohali Offers Advanced ‘Mechanical Thrombectomy’ Treatment For Brain Stroke Patients

Ropar, Aug.18, 2023:-Brain stroke is a predominant factor for long-term disability and even death. The life-threatening medical condition causes irreversible damage to the brain cells. However, emerging advanced healthcare technologies such as Mechanical Thrombectomy, is available 24x7 at select hospitals, Fortis Mohali, being one of them. Mechanical Thrombectomyin select caseshashelped save life of critical patientseven after 24 hours of suffering a stroke.

Mechanical Thrombectomy is a minimally-invasive procedure that involves inserting a catheter into the brain artery to remove the clot. This allows restoration of blood flow and saves a patient from disability or death by increasing treatment window in brain stroke patientstill 24 hours.

In one such case, the team of doctors led by Dr Prof Vivek Gupta, Additional Director of Interventional Neuroradiology, Fortis HospitalMohali, recently treated a 42-year-old man, who was rushed to Fortis Mohali, post 12 hours after suffering a stroke. The Patientwas unable to speak, had facial drooping, and had also paralyzed the right side of his body. Dr Gupta conducted Mechanical Thrombectomyon the patient to remove a clot from his brain orneck – sometimes arteries are blocked in the neck, sometimes in the brain, and at times, both the brain and neck have to beopened as per the medical condition. The Patient had a smooth, post-operative recovery and was discharged five days after the procedure. He has recovered fully and is leading a normal life today.

Discussing the advanced treatment option,Dr Gupta, said, "Mechanical Thrombectomy can be done till 24-hours after the onset of stroke in selected patients. It is a minimally invasive procedure wherein an interventional neuroradiologist uses specialized equipment to remove a clot from a patient's brain or neck artery."

DrProf Gupta, said that Fortis Hospital Mohaliis one of the few centres in the North Region to offer 24x7 advanced Neuro-interventional treatment and comprehensive stroke care, including CT Perfusions and Mechanical Thrombectomy, to patients round the clock. The expert team of doctors comprising expert neurologists, interventional neuro-radiologists, neurosurgeons and anesthetists provide 24x7 stroke treatment. All services related to stroke diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation, are provided under one roof.

Meanwhile, brain stroke patients sometimes also require surgical management through the most advanced technique of Neuro-Navigation. Dr Harsimrat Bir Singh Sodhi, Senior Consultant, Neuro-Spine Surgery, Fortis Hospital Mohali, who has treated several brain stroke patients through surgical intervention, said that Neuro-navigation is a computer-assisted, invasive surgery that allows a surgeon to 'navigate' within the brain with precision. Extreme caution is taken not to damage the underlying brain tissue. Surgical management of stroke is required in patients when swelling around the affected brain tissue increases. This can happen anytime between the first 5-7days of the occurrence. Some patients might develop increased fluid in the brain, which might also require surgery.

He added that both Neuro-Navigation and a high-end microscope are available at Fortis Mohali. Excellent surgery outcomes are also ensured through the Neuro-Anaesthesia team and a fully-equipped Neurosurgery ICU. The Neuro-Anesthesia team is trained to take all necessary precautions during and after the surgery, especially problems related to the risk of excessive bleeding. All these factors lead to a successful surgery.
