Gopa Foundation Celebrates 1st Anniversary

Gopa Foundation (gopafoundation.org) is a charitable trust registered in India (Chandigarh) and is established in the memory of Late Mrs Brijinder Dargan (Gopa), former associate professor and Head of Botany Department, Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Chandigarh who battled with breast cancer for nine years and passed away in early May 2020., celebrated its 1st anniversary, on Sunday, the 24th October,2021 at Nagpal Super speciality Hospital, Sector 19, Chandigarh. Present on the occasion were Dr. Atul Sachdeva, former Director Principal of Govt. Medical college and Hospital, Dr. Jyotisna Sachdecva, Dr. Jetinder Singla, Dr Rishi Raj and several other dignitaries from Chandigarh besides several former colleagues and friends of late Mrs Brijinder Dargan. Dr. Mangat Dogra, Himachal Gaurav awardee and former Professor and Head Advanced eye centre PGI, presided over the function. Dr. Gurpaul Singh formally welcomed the guest and thanked the donors for contributing towards the cause. Dr. Mangla Dogra, a well-known gynaecologist of the city, who was very intimately connected to Mrs Dargan spoke about her personality and her pursuits of helping the poor and needy. Dr. J.S. Dargan, President of the foundation introduced the Foundation to the guests and briefly outlined its objectives. He also highlighted the achievements made during one-year existence of the foundation and also gave outlines of the future plans of the foundation

Dr. Mangat Dogra in his presidential remarks appreciated the efforts of all Trustees and members related to this cause. He also appealed to the citizens in general to come forward with more such social works to help and uplift the living conditions of the underprivileged section of society. On this occasion 25 children both boys and girls of secondary and senior secondary school classes were given financial assistance in the form of bank cheques by Dr. Dogra and other dignitaries assisted by Mr. Bipin Kaushal and Mr Surendra Prasad, the trustees. At the end Mrs. Shavinder Dhillon, Secretary of the foundation thanked the guests and the parents of the students for making the event a success.

The primary objective of the foundation is to promote education of the underprivileged children.  The foundation, presided by Dr J.S. Dargan started working in July, 2020. In its first year, in spite of Covid -19 threat, the foundation invited online applications from the needy children from various schools of Chandigarh and neighbouring Punjab and Haryana villages for financial support. As many as 22 applicants were shortlisted after a thorough scrutiny. A simple event, following all covid protocols, was held on August 10, 2020 and bank cheques worth a sum of Rs 50,000 were distributed to the deserving children. To monitor their studies and other financial requirements for the current academic year, a face to face interactive workshop for the students was recently organised by the trustees on 10th October, 2021. New applications from the needy students were also considered in the workshop. Based on this academic audit few more deserving students are selected and at present 51 school going students,26 girls and 25 boys of various age groups, are registered with the foundation.
